Electronic ign will cut out if voltage is low
Check battery bolts and ground wire on frame.

How long have you had the bike, and what maintenance has been done while you've owned it?

A battery that takes no charge is a battery that needs to be replaced. The big question is did it die of natural causes, or did the charging system kill it?

    Replace the battery.

Also check the voltage at the battery posts when the bike is idling, when it is at 2,500 RPM, and when it is above 3,000 RPM. Report back.

So you are depending on a long laid-up motorcycle to get to work?
This will not go well for you.

Unless this has been your daily rider for a long time you need to do a thorough recomissioning for it to be safe and reliable.

TECH TOPIC: The Real Costs of Maintenance

    The Information Overload Hour

If it has been your daily rider for a long time, and you haven't kept up on the required maintenance, it still needs to be recommissioned.

No. If the stand switch is at fault the bike will die as soon as the clutch is released.

Well, technically, depending on how "tight" the cable is adjusted, and how much "slop" there is in the switch, then he could get some movement (clutch engagement) before the circuit opens and kills the TCI.

remove the sidestand safety switch RELAY to bypass the sidestand safety switch . this will confirm it as the culprit.

Doesn't the side stand switch work in conjunction with the neutral switch? If side stand was faulty it would shut ignition down as soon as shifted out of neutral. The clutch switch would only come into play if starting out of neutral.

Generally I have the clutch lever pulled to the bar when I shift out of neutral.
You can start the bike in neutral with the Sidestand down. Lift the stand, pull the clutch, shift into first and the bike will stay running even with a faulty Sidestand switch. Let the clutch out and the ignition is cut unless the Sidestand switch is closed.
    Chacal's comment makes sense.

Interesting, I didn't know that. I do know an 82 650 will shutdown as soon as you shift out of neutral if the sidestand is down or switch is faulty/hungup.

Hmm... I might be remembering wrong. It's been a while since I've had a sidestand problem.

I don't know the wiring on that bike nor have I had one so you may be right. Just seemed odd to me based on the bikes I have now.

No worries, I'm getting the age where I need my kids to help with the iPhone. I remember when I was young and couldn't understand why my parents could never program the VCR.

What worries me is that it's been so long since I was on my XJ that I had to think about how I get the dang thing to move.

I am having a Similar problem. Bike starts and runs fine in neutral. As soon as I shift to 1 or 2, the bike dies immediately. The 83 XJ750 has a new battery, but no other upgrades yet. I rode it yesterday, and today, no bueno. Any ideas?

Unplug the sidestand relay, and/or clean the sidestand switch by peeling back the rubber boot, and sprayng contact cleaner into the plunger as you move it in and out.

Sidestand (kickstand) relay (blue): behind the left frame side cover, on the plastic regulator-rectifier mounting plate.

Would you mind clarifying for future readers?
Was it the relay or was the switch dirty?

The kickstand part was sticking. I just tried some WD and it worked after that.

Cool. WD-40 won't hang around for long. Follow up with a dry-fillm lubricant, or silicone spray. Make cleaning the switch part of your annual maintainance.

Make sure the put the kickstand up before putting the bike in gear . It will shut the engine off when trying to let the clutch out of the kickstand is down.
