Saw this relatively close, thinking I could snag it for $200 or less. What do you guys think? I have two 1984 magna 700s and I'm currently restoring one. I dont think I'll have a problem with getting this maxim to run.

Looks like a good project. Carbs probably will require a rebuild ( only way to properly clean carbs is a full teardown and soak in carb cleaner...spray carb cleaner will not get into small passages of the carb. See church of clean) expect to spend 2 to 4 hundred to get going( battery, carb kits, tires etc) , if your new to this site ...Welcome ..on the top right of the page click on xj4ever....chacal has most parts either factory or pattern parts his service is great....keep us informed if you purchase bike. Cheers

You better get that, I am close to you and have not seen that bike. As long as there is a title with the bike you will be getting a heck of a deal. I like the Seca (more upright riding) but that is a good looking bike. IMHO

Automatic transmission? BTW, I use an ultrasonic machine to clean not only carburetors but many other detail items. Works well.

Okay that is an XV Virago. I had an 82 ,here are a few items , make sure you have a fully charged battery, the starters are big problem with these bikes. Be aware the carb overhaul kits usually come with 122 jets...these are are wrong for 82 to 84 front cylinder if I recall was 124 and rear 134 . Do not remove or modify the intake airbox....this will make starting harder...hence starter problem. Look up Dr Virago he sells a kit that has stiffer spring and shim kit. I used to be on the Virago site not sure if it is still active. Looks like you have a good bike , these are great bikes I bought mine for 400$ and flipped it for 1500$ ...you can move to "Other bikes" on this site. Good luck.

I'm going to go try and see it today. Owner gave me permission to try and start it. Going to check for spark first, if it has spark I'll empty out any fuel in it and put a little bit of fresh gas in it. If that doesn't work I'll switch to starter fluid to see if I can get it to fire up. If it fires up I'm definitely taking it home. If it doesn't I still probably will lol

I got the bike, it seems to be having that common starter issue. Brand new starter on it and it almost wanted to turn over right away and then it started grinding. Any links to a fix?

Yeah just finished watching a couple of videos, taking off the crank case tomorrow and removing that spring. If the starter gear looks bad then I'm ordering a replacement for it. Gonna hope the gasket around the cover stays intact or is good enough to run for a little bit. Also noticed fuel leaking from the carbs on the left side. I believe it to be from the float bowl gasket

Get a soft mallet and start to tap on it around the cover. Making sure you have all the bolts out, look under the cover really well some of us older folks that don't have a lift might miss one of them bolts now and then. You should be able to tap it off with a soft mallet or brass hammer. Remember it is cast aluminum (I think) and it could break with too much force.

Dr Virago sells a kit with a stiffer fork type spring, and shim for the starter , keep a fully charged battery . I. Went through 3 starters until I got this kit...the original starter burnt up , the second the post burnt off never sure why all was tight , place I bought it from sent me a third no charge, got carbs straightened out and good starter ...success.

Yeah that starter grind is both annoying and unsettling.
