For ticking.... first thing I suggest—-

check all your exhaust collars and nuts. It’s very possible you have a loose one

Had a loose spark plug. Like, very loose. Think I found the ticking.

(It wasn't loose when this all started, I pulled and checked them all after the no starting started lol.

As soon as we bent down to start looking, it was pretty obvious. That plug was so loose, we could just pull it out by hand...

Sorry to "like" that, but I am quite happy as well that I don't have a long engine rebuild ahead of me! Yet, lol..

Is this main gear stripped? It has a like, kind of a bevel that I don't see on new gears.

Wow! So it was the starter? That gear looks fine to me.

    Apparently!
Pic shows my next best guess. I think they were thin when I rebuilt.

Doesn't sound like brushes should be the issue, since the starter was spinning just fine. I wonder if there's a shim or a bushing out of place that makes the gear not stick out the correct amount.

Interesting theory. I might have to disassemble both (for comparison) and make sure that isn't it. I kinda think the copper strips the brushes spin around are too thin, they aren't even copper colored anymore.

Can you rotate that gear with your hand and is it fairly difficult to rotate, which would be normal? If you place a meter on the large terminal and chassis you should see about .3V being generated when you rotate the gear. With the meter positive on the large terminal and black on chassis you should see a positive voltage when you rotate the gear CW (viewed from starter gear end).

If the above checks out then powering the starter to check the direction of spin could still be in order. The brushes appear to be correct in the pic you posted, but shorted commutator rings might get it going in the wrong direction.

I'll have to do those tests on it tomorrow. Apparently I have coronavirus! Yah!:(

I will get around to the testing, though, because I'm super curious why it doesn't start the bike. I'm also going to measure it for SQLguys suggestions.
