    Hi all -

I just picked up my first Seca, after wanting on since 1982. The transmission seems to be stuck in gear and I'm concerned that the engine may be shot. Anyone got a 550 Seca engine available that they could part with?

Any xj550 engine will work. Why do you say the transmission is stuck in gear?

    Hi -

    Thanks for writing!

Well, I can't move the shift lever, and the chain has been taken off the rear sprocket, I assume so it can be rolled around. I'm hoping, if I can re-engage the chain and rock the bike a little, I can get it to shift. I bought it last Friday and I'm picking it up tomorrow.

Isn't there a horsepower or gearing difference between the seca and maxim? I guessed they're physically the same, just wasnt sure if there was a performance difference.

    Thanks.

    Jeff

The Seca has a hotter cam. AFAIK, that's the only difference.

What part of Buffalo are you in? I might be able to take a swing by and take a look at your bike. I do have an extra engine that needs some love(just valves as far as i know), but I’m probably going to hold on to it for a bit.

Ok, so a bit more lift, letting the engine breathe better. That would pick up the performance a bit!

Is your drive chain locking the engine sprocket against the case?

Now you gotta find the side covers.... hope you already have the battery side one, otherwise you’re gonna be in for a shock! Not to mention finding the correct mufflers—-

What are the chances the engine/transmission are "locked up" due to the cam chain tensioner coming apart and jamming the trans? I have not experienced that but have read about it here. Fixing that would eliminate the want for the replacement engine. Just asking......

    Hi John -

Good question. I'm not that deeply into it yet, but that's a great suggestion.

Really! Are you thinking of letting that left muffler go?

Maaaaybeeee...... I’d really like to trade for an extra Right, but send me a private conversation.

I MIGHT have an extra 550 engine, too... I’ll hafta check to see if I still have that. I don’t recall if it’s still here or not.

I’m just a few hrs East of you..... below Utica

So, it appears I actually dont need an engine, so y'all can call off the search. Thanks for responding and offering advice.

Now, I'm looking for the rubber grommets that hold the side covers on.
