Start by checking your fuses. You may still have a bit of bare wire touching the frame somewhere.

All fuses are good. I did buy a haynes manual just for the wiring diagram but the diagram is usless as there is no legend or colour codes for the wires so i have no idea what colour traces go to where

If the 600 is like the 550 the headlight comes on when the engine is running.

A color diagram can be found here. Edit: wrong model and year. Give me a minute and I'lll find the right one.

viewtopic.php (SecaII diagram if anyone needs it).

    Edit #2

A free with account copy: XJ600 Wiring Diagram

I'll keep looking. I thought I had a PDF of it saved but can't seem to find the thing.

It's unlike Haynes to not have each wire labled with color codes, but every publisher does make mistakes occasionally.

Also check that the headlight switch is functioning. The contacts might need to be cleaned.

haynes wiring diagram for the xj600 is shyte, the key numbers dont match, and theres no colour key,
if you now have the correct diagram ,
if you dont have main or dip lights working then chances are , the fault is earlier on in the circuit,.
first check for voltage in and out of the fuse with red/yellow wires
if you have a multimeter, set it to dc volts 20ish, put one probe on a good earth ,or battery earth
put the other probe on the fuse, both in and out with ignition on
red /yellow wire then goes to the r.h. light switch
check for voltage there in the same way
wire colour then changes to blue / black, check for voltage there on the blue/black
the blue / black wire then goes to the high / low beam switch on the r.h
let us know how you go on up to there
if you dont have a multimeter a test bulb with 2 wires attached is just as good
i prefer a test screwdriver with earth wire , for initial testing
    stu

red wire goes to ignition switch, then colour changes to brown , then goes back to the fuse box brown wired fuse, test the brown wired fuse ,in and out, that then splits to the red / yellow fuse , and the red / white wire fuse.
