Hello everyone! I sent my bike to the mechanic for a carburation problem...she, yes SHE, took everything apart, cleaned them, putted them back together, I bought a new battery too, she started the bike left it running for a while and called me to pick it up... Two days after that call, she told me that the bike wont start due to the batterie wont hold the charge (battery was charged as indications said) so I stoped by, charged then battery again, pushed to make it start and nothing, not even an explotion in the cylinders...have gas to the carbs, She is checking sparks today... What you guys think we are missing here? It happened before that the old battery wont hold the full charge but I pushed the bike for a few meters and started right up... If She (the mechanic) find out that there is spark, I dont know what else to check here.... Any ideas? Thank you so much...

If the battery isnt holding a charge, then the charging system needs to be looked at.

And, the charging system on these bikes wont keep the battery charged at idle speeds. They need to have the revs up above about 1100 rpm

The idle was set as manual at +- 1300 rpms.... But stayed idle for a couple of minutes only just to see if ther is nkt backfires or if it idle was smooth and then turned off...

Can the charging system go off just like that? No prior glich or anything? How can I test that then?

    Go to https://www.xjbikes.com/forums/threads/the-information-overload-hour.27544/

    Then ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS

Which will be where you can get a lot of info on the charging system, which at one point states:

"Your charging system output VOLTAGE should be checked, again at the battery terminals, while the engine is running. The measured voltage should be:

    * 14.2 - 14.8 Volts at about 2,000 rpms for all non-X models, and the same voltage for "X" models, but at about 3,000 rpms. Again, you would measure these voltages at the battery terminals with your voltmeter."

new battery can be bad charge it out of bike then let sit overnight and measure voltage should be 12.8 volts
then test battery voltage drop when cranking wants to stay above 9.8 volts any less it will not fire

brushes could be bad worn down. the copper rings could be dirty
you can ohm out the brushes.
use a meter to test voltage regulator
battery charges back through switch and main fuse. could be dirty contacts in switch or dirty battery wires.

there is the wire that runs to main fuse from battery check it out for good connection. check the connector to voltage regulator. make sure the grounds are clean where they connect to motor and from motor to frame.

bottom of this thread has info on charging system and what to look for
The Ultimate Relay, Switch, Sensor, and Diodes Guide

as far as spark if you still have the old fuse box that could be the issue
the clips crack and cause issues

I will check all that, but the bike started 2 days before all these and nothing was done after.... So, even if the battery wont hold charge with a little charge you should be able to push it to start... But in this case it wont, even with battery at 11.25, that is what confuse me

I always start by looking where the work was done,
so carbs were worked on and battery changed.

I agree you should be able to bump start the bike.

I would check to see if the throttle cable and choke cable are connected to carbs in correct locations. I do assume the carbs were removed when they were worked on.
I mention this because the choke will be needed to bump start the bike.

I would also make sure battery connections are tight

this next suggestion is going to sound dumb. but how much fuel is in the tank? could be to low to supply carbs.
also check the fuel and vacuum hoses are connected at both ends and not kinked

its pointles telling him solutions, untill he tells us WHICH BIKE it is
some xj's dont have brushes, some xj's dont have choke cables

Someone said about the fusebox...its the original now but what you mean by replace it? For a new one o other one? Fail to mention that Im not in the USA or Europe... Im in Argentina, parts are hard to find and usually I use the Virago 750 o 1100cc, with that being said...if I have to change the fusebox what should I use?

    -Why were the diaphragms replaced?
    -Check fuses/clips
-did the bike get shifted into gear? Check safety relays

The 1985 XJ700 does not have the issue of a glass fuse type box under the seat that can be a problem. The blade fuses are safely nestled under the indicator light section below the instruments and is rarely a problem, I think.

There is still a main fuse under the seat, and fuses can still go bad, get corrosion on the ends, etc.....
