Motor oil, is it lubricated by the oil in the gearbox or is there another inlet for a different oil?

I recently acquired a 1981 xj650 maxim and don't really know much about it, want to make sure everything has clean new oil, fuel, and anything else it might need, curious if all oil is through the gear box or if there's an inlet for oil specifically for the motor?

    Gearbox and crankcase share oil.

Avoid synthetic, as it can cause premature failure of the starter clutch.

That used to be the case, but isn't anymore. There are several very good synthetic oils that are formulated to be used in older motorcycles, and they will not cause starter clutch slippage.
