I’m attaching a video of the sound my bike makes when i go press the start button (if i can figure it out). It clicks and makes a whirring noise and all the lights shut off when the start button is in. Does anybody recognize what this might be? I bought the bike non-running it’s an 85 XJ700 Maxim.

Brand new battery. I also just took out the starter and tested it hooked up straight to the battery and it spun fine

You might remove the starter look in , you might have stripped the gear that engages the starter clutch, afraid only way to fix it is to pull engine and split the case . The starter clutch has three pawls rollers and springs if these stick or worse the clutch is cracked it will not engage.
