Oxy/acetylene, an old computer case, Tin snips, some galv paint and your good to go.

    Patch it in other words.

Exactly, and people toss out valuable repair sheets every week in every neighbourhood. Old fridges, washing machines, tumble driers, etc.

I do not have access to welding equipment. Is it possible to rent or buy for an affordable price? I want to assume JB weld would be a poor option?

JB Weld is an option! I did a small muffler patch with it recently. Cut a small metal scrap out of your dishwasher or computer case that is slightly larger than your hole and thread it in from the outside. I welded a nail on mine to pull it back, but without a welder a small screw could do the same thing. Smear the JB weld around the edges after the piece is inside, pull it back and secure (rubber bands, weights, baling wire...whatever it takes) and smear some more JB over the outside. You can snip the screw off later.

Normal JB weld is rated at 550 degrees. Don't get hung up on making it perfect. You are starting with scrap. A mistake or two isn't going to matter.

that is super helpful, thanks for the details, I may try that first and if I run into issues I can try to find a welder

My fiancé has zinc plates sheet metal, would that be an ideal patch?

Even better. It'll last longer than the original metal, which was pretty long already.
I ended up pretty much encapsulating the whole collector when I fixed mine up.

If and when you go to use the treated metal, make sure you have very good ventilation or even a fan blowing the air away from you. That stuff is great to use, but our bodies do not like that stuff.

Is that if I weld it or does that include the JB weld method mentioned earlier, or both haha

Welding plated metal (zinc) makes noxious fumes. No worries with JB Weld.

Just wait... In a few years we will all die from the 'noxious' fumes from jbweld.

But in the meantime I agree, completely.

    Sorry.
    Drunken melancholy on my part.
I really shouldn't spew my thoughts out at this point.
    A fragile existence we perceive.
    My apologies.

My post was a joke. Everything here in the States has a warning that something about it is known to cause cancer in California.

With how thin the collector is from the rusting process, I am not too sure how well either process will work for any longevity. I do wish you luck if you try to repair it. I would think getting a used one online would be best.

This is what mine started out like. I cut it open to pull out the rattling rusted out baffles.
    You are right about thin.
By the time I finished adding steel it was more computer case than original.
    Worked though.

Those baffles are really the secret to success for the collector....they maintain the correct "pulsing" relationship for the exhaust flow(s) and create the scavenging effect within the exhaust system that is so near and dear to all of our hearts.
