Thinking about painting on some sort of accent on the side panels. I think somethings needed to break up the black. Right now I'm thinking about a number "7" with a thin ring around it. Painted in the Candy Red again.

 I think so..... But, the bike was free, so there is no reason for dishonesty. The guy is of good character, and anxious to see it finished as well. He's prob. following along right now, as I forwarded a link to him

nice look. I say you definitely need to add something to the side covers though. Even if there is a problem with it running, I am sure it can be figured out on here rather easily. Hopefully it will be nothing major and will just need a good carb cleaning and tune.

It might look good with just the black part of the wheels painted red. Just a thought

no, you should leave the rims alone...but as far as the #7 idea...maybe you should have a sign shop do it in vinyl so you can dump it if you want...I think a Black 7 with a fine red outline in a white circle with red outline would be sick though...

The wheels would look good with a gold accent... Candy apple red and gold are a fantastic combo.

Hey Guy's....Thanks again for the added comments, and suggestions! 8)

Not to sure I want to do to much with the wheels, other than a good cleaning, and polishing though. Might paint up some red caps though. I'd hate to paint them, as the up-keep in order to keep them looking good suck. Only other option would be powder coating them, but not looking to spend the extra cash on that. Some great idea's, but just not feasable for myself. I also agree that gold would go well, but just doesn't tie into the whole paint scheme. Keep the suggestions coming though! 8)

I do like where your going with the multi-colour, with this one. I think I'd stay away from the white though, and perhaps use a silver instead..... I think it would help tie everything together quite well :!:

Perhaps I'll break out the kids crayons tonight, and try a couple samples on paper.

I also have some thin silver pin striping I purchased a few years ago for a car. Maybe outline the red stripe :?:

The thin pinstripe really sets off that red stripe. I say go for it. You wouldn't happen to have some gold striping lying around would you? I'd try that too then decide.

I like the looks of this bike, but, bring your shampoo when you go for ride. That way you can take a shower when the rain starts. I had a bike that I thought would look cool without a rear fender. But I was competely wet 2 minutes after it started to rain.

Check the weather before you ride.

They where sprayed with a silver, then a candy red, and then clear coated.

OK...I'll take that as a "Yes" to pin striping it  I think your all right, that it helps set off the red stripe. I do not have any gold pin striping to even put on for a visual. Although, I'm sure it would look sweet with the black, and red, I'd have to say that I'd prob. stick with the silver. I'll pin stripe the bike tomorrow, and post up some pics... 8)

Got playing with the kids crayons as well, and came up with the following....

(No laughing at my grade 5 colouring capabilities)

    1)

    2)

    3)

    4)
My son had to get in on the action, when Daddy broke out the crayons 8)

And here is a side view to show the proportions, and how it helps to break up the black.......

I'm kinda partial to #1).....Red "7" ....Red "O", and the "7" outlined in silver. Any thoughts are other colour schemes?

Beautiful, Cheese!! I absolutely love it! Not totally crazy about the rr fender "stub", but that's just me.

I think if I hadn't been following this project I wouldn't have jumped on the basket-case 650 someone just offered me.

    Good work!

So, out of curiosity... How would you make a seat like that? Do you make it from scratch or start with the original seat pan and cut it down?

    Cheesy,
I like what you've done with the bike. I had the shorty rearend on my bobber last season and although it looked great, it offered no protection what so ever. I have a gravel driveway that's only a block long and I can feel rocks hit me in the back of the head when I ride out of the yard. I can't imagine what it would be like getting caught in the rain!!
The stripes look good also. It gives a good clean look to the project. I particularly like the red candy paint on the carbs, That's a nice touch. I need to do some painting on my engine this winter and being I have my rims painted red already, I'll need to use red in other areas to tie everything together and the candy red looks like one idea I may copy from you. I just wish I could find high temp candy to do other parts of the engine. I may just have to go with a bright red and call it good. My hat's off to you in your chop!!! >PD<

It is the original pan, that was cut down with an angle grinder and cut off wheel, then it was shaped with an angle grinder with a soft disk on it. The soft disc was a flap style. Other than that, I just pulled some vinyl around it that I had from a previous project, and fastened it with an electric stapler.

Hey Painter.....Damn...Nice Bike! Like what you've done with it. Both tails look great, I think. I can see how you have better protection with the latest one though. Personally, I don't think my tail will be much of an issue for me. As I have no gravel roads I need to go down, and I don't enjoy riding in the rain, and avoid it at all costs. I figure if I get caught in the rain, I'm going to get wet regaurdless. On another note though....The tail of the bike was completed when I aquired the bike, and I felt the previous owner did a great job, and therefore wasn't about to change it. I do see where yours, and others, concerns come into play with the rain and gravel though, and I plan on avoiding those riding conditions 99% of the time.

Back to your bike...... I'm liking those forward controls! Have you got the build documented anywhere?

As for the candy red paint..... The stuff that I used, is actually more of an anodized paint. It reads on the back that it is good for heat resistant up to 260c/500f, and also oil, and gas resistant. It also reads suggested uses such as....valve covers, air cleaners, water pumps, calipers, and oil pans. Probably a good chance it would suit your needs as well. It's made by "Dupli-Color" and product name is "Metalcast". I have a picture of the can a few posts back. If you require any more info., just ask. It's a three step process....Base......Anodized color....ans Clear. All of which they sell. I believe they have 5-6 different anodized colors to choose from as well. Hope this helps!

I'm sure you can find a decent used seat, and tank rather easy. If not on this forum, then here is my list of local on-line wreckers. Maybe fire off a generic e-mail inquiry to all of them...

    Cheesy,
Thanks for the info. I found the paint at Checker auto, and some other stores do carry it, so it looks like it'll be part of the new look when I get started.
The forward controls were fabricated out of parts I had from other bikes and some welding parts I made for the supports. I will try to get some photos taken (close up) and get them headed your way soon. The bracing (mounts) are bolted to the front engine mounts (pretty sollid) and the pegs and control arms are supported from there. The hardest part was adjusting the control arm shafts so the peddles were in the correct position. I had to do some fancy welding to get threaded adjusting rods on the ends so I could get some kind of adjustment after everything was bolted together. I still have some cosmetic work to do on them, but they work great. It's so much more comfortable then the stock location and I only wished I had done it a long time ago.
It's always handy to have a motorcycle junk yard near by for parts, but everything can be fabricated with out of 1/4" flat stock and heavy wall tubing for pivot points. After looking at how most forward controls are fabricated I decided to make my own instead of paying the extreme price. I think it took me most of one day to make the controls and and another to adjust and paint everything. I'll be back. >PD<

Those mufflers are the 12" shorties like the ones from JC Whitney. Mine have straight thru baffles inside them. I got mine used here locally, but there are several places that sell them. They slipped right onto the exhaust box under the bike. >PD<

Well found a little free time this weekend, and completed the exhaust, switched handle bars, and grips. Will change the oil this week, and hopefully fire it up by next weekend. I'll get some pictures up later on tonight. I never took any before pics. this time, but just imagine the exhaust completely covered in rust. The headers where rather good, but the collector needed some welding.

    OK...Here are some pics....

Went with these black bars, as they give it a little height to clear the tank. Plus a little pulled back to better suit the forward controls I plan on putting on. Was luck enough to find them in black as well....

The exhaust was in pretty bad shape from front to back, and quite the eye soar. Wrapped the headers, repaired the collector (welded), and painted the cans. Kept it pretty simply due to time, and the fact that I'm trying to build this bike for next to nothing. Looks 100% better...

And of course...... I broke the very last stud that I was tightening :x

Anyone have an extra one kicking around? :D

Hmmm, surprisingly enough, the exhaust looks pretty good wrapped like that. Not a bad idea at all. It always great to have something that looks decent with very little invested.

Danno...... Man....That would be greatly appreciated !!! I'll be sure to pass along the good Karma !!!! Let me know if there are any small parts you may require as well. As I'm sure I'll have lots of little goodies left over. I'm sending you a P.M.

    Thanks, Cheesy !

Advice on the black wrap---. If you want it to stay black, paint it, otherwise it will turn grey.

Thanks Kev..... Ya, I do recall reading that somewhere on the forum. I was thinking of doing that after I fire it, and get it nice and warm, so it bakes it's self on there. Appreciate the heads up !

    Thanks, Cheesy!
