Dot 3 Vs Dot 4 Brake Fluid

    If I read that correctly, DOT3 and DOT4 are pretty much the same...although I was always under the (possibly mistaken) impression that DOT4 was "LMA" (low moisture acquisition.) There was a time (some years back, admittedly) when DOT4 was difficult to find, being only for high performance vehicles. The Lockheed brake on my Norton calls for DOT4, I have an OLD can of CASTROL GT-LMA brake fluid, DOT4. (I saved it for posterity, I use fresh stuff of course.) If the article is to be believed, it appears as though 3 and 4 have evolved into much the same thing. I'm skeptical, will continue to use DOT4.

    Reason I asked is because my reservoir says to use Dot 3 and I bought a bottle of DOT 4 then thought I wonder if it will make any difference.

    In this case I think not :)

    chacal, thx for that link. i tend to enjoy obscure knowledge so that was a nice start for the day. as a new-b to the site i was especially happy to find a good source for parts! the two local dealers (one is a yamaha) suck. i think i'll just the change brake fluid with good o'le DOT 3.

    I get asked this question a lot. The simple answer is that DOT 4 has a higher boiling point than DOT 3 and, therefore, recommended where severe driving conditions are present.
