I’ve got an 82 550 Maxim that I’ve poured too much money into at this point and have done everything under the sun to get running, and it was up until the starting electronics quit and I haven’t touched it far about a year or so since.

Did some work on it earlier this year, bought a new Starter Relay with the hopes that it would fix my issue but nothing so far.

    The problem:
When key is turned, neutral light comes on and all lights come on just fine. When switched from off to RUN, a few solenoids/relays tick and do their thing as they always have. Now when I go to push the start button, silence. If I hold it for a little bit there’s the slightest whine of something electrical wanting to work but aside from that nothing.

If the problem is a bad battery, I want to be absolutely sure before I go spending money on a new one when the one it has is new as of about a year and a half ago from the last mechanic visit.

The neutral light does dim so I know it’s registering the button press but not getting anything else. Please help!! Trying to fix it myself as I don’t feel the bike is worth another 400-500$ mechanic visit!

So in your previous post you were troubleshooting the starter not engaging when the start button was depressed, but you were getting an oil light that indicates the starter button switch was working -the bike ran fine if you bumped started it. However, now the title says no spark, but the body of text suggests no crank like before, so a bit confusing? I will assume no crank or starter not engaging when the starter button is pushed

Just to be sure it was the high current relay, or the starter solenoid relay that was replaced. There is also a starter cutoff relay (low current) that is part of the starter safety circuit

That's easy to check if you have a DMM. Just hook it to the battery terminals and observe the reading when you push the start button. A fully charged good battery will stay above 10 volts even when the starter is turning the motor. If you don't have a meter or want to get one the shops can load test the battery to confirm its condition before buying another one.
