I’ve seen so many of these posts about 550 Maxims not starting, at this point I think it’s a genuine curse.

I just got mine back from the mechanic. In total I’ve already put $2k into the bike and I’m starting to get over it. The wiring harness was redone by the previous owner, I’ve had the carb cleaned and rejected by Yamaha, and my mechanic replaced all the old intake boots and old fuel petcock, it’s got a new battery, new regulator, and Yamaha rebuilt one of the starter components that can’t be bought OEM (can’t remember which one)

The bike starts and runs absolutely fine, but you have to pop start it from first gear in a roll. The start button still works, bright green neutral and oil light but no clicking of relays or solenoids. Has anyone had a similar issue? From the other posts I’ve seen on the issue, I’ve already covered most of not all of the possible issues.

The bike does have the crap Pod filters and I want to replace it with the original box. Which brings me to a second question, will an ‘81 XJ550H air box fit in my ‘82 XJ550?

    Start button works?
So the starter motor turns but you still have to push start...
    Sorry a bit confusing.
