    Hi all!

    I have a quick question regarding a replacement of an 1986 XJ700 primary coil (cylinders 1 &4).

I received a “universal” coil from the bike shop (the left one in the first photo). I measured it and it is within specs for my XJ700. It has to be installed rotated by 90 degrees, has a slight difference in the distance between screws but I made it work.

However, when I look at the -/+ wires on the new coil, the wires seems switched compared to the old coil (see photo 1). When looking at the diagram (photo 2) I am almost sure that R/W(red and white) cable is the + and O(orange) cable is the -.

Question: If I connect R/W to the plus (right connection on the new coil) and O cable to the minus (left connection) will that be correct?

Thanks in advance for an answer!

That will be fine for wiring

In your last thread you mentioned it was a combination of battery and ignition coil causing a spark issue, but didn't mention what was wrong with the original coil - that could be helpful in getting things properly diagnosed

    Hi Rooster53!

The coil was significantly out of specs - the secondary resistance was around 2M Ohms.

I have changed the battery and connected the new coil according to the above explanation. Works well, ignites without any issues.

    Thanks again!
