The Stickies make it clear that Maintenance Ain't Cheap.

Well... seeing as it was going to cost me at least $2000, closer to $3000 to fix my truck, I sold it off to finance a full tune for Max.

$440ish for 3 new tires, brakes, suspension tweak. (I ordered an extra rear because they are always on forever backorder)

$475ish to Len for new intake manifold gaskets, spin-on oil kit, UNI Air filter and associated fiddly bits,

And another $270ish for the parts installs, sync and tuneup.

    But, the Spin-On looks good:

The tires are WAAAAY better than the OEMS that were going slick, the intake boots are there, and the rest?
Well, we'll see if there is any performance increase that came with the tune, but given the Suckyness of my old intakes it's got to be better.

Thanks heaps to Len for setting me straight on a couple of parts and a thumbs up for the local (gasp) HONDA shop (Wild West Sports in Riverton WY) for taking my Len's Parts and my OEM Service Manual in hand and doing what the local Yamaha shop wouldn't even touch (he won't work on ANYTHING more than 10 yrs old).

Now I just get to wait 2500mi so I can change my own oil...

BTW, what's the preferred method for cleaning/degreasing the engine & lower chassis? I don't want to get high pressure water/degreaser where it shouldn't go..

Imagine what a brand new 1982 XJ would cost if you could find one. You didn't spend money, you saved it.

I degrease with simple green, or GUNK and wash after with a soap from my bucket and water from my garden hose. As long as you don't use a pressure washer you won't get anything wet that wasn't meant to get wet.

Well, I've got as much fixed now as I can for now. It's been a great daily rider for since I bought it 6000mi ago, even with the sucky boots, and now it's just mostly (?) cosmetics and saving up for a new winter vehicle...

    My thoughts too...

FWIW, the tuneup has done some nice things... I actually got max on one wheel on my standing quarter this afternoon...

Most dealers are that way now. When you think about most of the mechanics they have are the same age or younger the these bikes

Actually, I ran into the same thing with Apache Motorcycles. They're willing to do routine maintenance but, anything involving a service manual they wont touch. But, they're very helpful in directing me to Cycle Werks in pheonix Az. Talk to French if you're in the area. If you do much of your own work he'll only do what as he said "you actually needed me to do" and I was even willing to pay between 800-1200 to get my baby roadworthy... he knew this and my bill... was only 458 bucks. I was blown away by that but, if you wrench he'll make you earn your ride(and also provides protips.)

Anywho yeah, it's annoying 10 years is what dealers do but, considering the majority of "riders" that trailer their bikes to events and show off every "custom" (read factory option) bike they have (paid someone else to "custom") it's not really that shocking.
