Hey guys, I need help. I recently got an xj 750 from a buddy and it hasn't been started in over 10 years. After I rebuilt the carbs and changed oil, I tried starting it. Once I turn the key to " On", every warning light comes on and I have no power to my starter motor. Any idea what's going on? Anything is appreciated! Thanks, Steve

I'm pretty sure that all the warning lights should come on when you turn the ignition to on. Once the engine starts the lights will go out, unless there is an actual warning condition.

If the starter isn't engaging then it could be an issue with the switch itself.

If you search around on the forum I believe you will find a way to engage the starter without using the switch.

I'm pretty sure the next response will be telling you to read the Information Overload forum which is the best place to start.

Check power at solenoid or one of the cut relays ( side stand or clutch switch)is not allowing power to activate solenoid

    ^^^ you guys rock ^^^

To check the starter on its own take a screwdriver and lay it across the two large terminals on the starter solenoid (found on the rear of the battery box). The starter should spin.

If the stater is good then apply 12 volts to the small terminals on the starter solenoid. You should hear a click. If not then the solenoid is bad and needs replaced.

If the starter solenoid clicks and the starter spins, then you need to investigate the starter cutoff circuit. We'll get to that once we hear back from you.

Side stand switch and clutch switch in lever housing. Do you have any kind of shop manual?

remove the sidestand safety switch it will eliminate the side stand switch as the issue.
unplug the clutch safety switch it is a green connector in the head light bucket.
bike will only start in neutral at this point.

    with key on
you want to check your ignition fuse for 12 volts
run switch to run position you want to check at tci for 12 volts at red/white wire
if you have 12 volts at fuse red/white wire but not tci check connector for run/kill switch , 2 red white wires look for 12 volts at each wire. 1 wire comes from fuse, 2ed wire goes to tci, starter cut off relay.
if you have 12 volts at both wires from connector check red/white wire at starter relay in and out for 12 volts. the starter relay sends 12 volts to the solinoid
