1982 xj750r problem

I purchased a 1982 xj750R late last year and it was running when I took it for a short test drive. I trailered it home about 60 miles. When I tried to start it the next day it would fire immediately, run for about 15 seconds and then die. The guy I bought it from said that he had recently cleaned the carbs and then had to clean them a second time to get it to start/run consistently over time. He said that each time he had them apart they were pretty dirty and he "cleaned" them up and reinstalled. He didn't have an filter installed so I assumed that something had loosened and plugged them up on the trip home. I don't know how well he cleaned them but he certainly didn't do a rebuild. I tore them off the bike and did a pretty thorough cleaning but didn't tear the carb assemblies apart from one another. I mainly wanted to see how dirty they might be and they had some fine material in the bowls and the floats were bent and way of adjustment but they didn't seem too bad. I put them back together and onto the bike after doing some basic adjustments and it seems to be running, or NOT running the same as before. I have installed a filter and have the fuel supplied through a small "clean" tank although the OEM tank seems to be rust free and pretty clean the gas also seemed relatively fresh. Battery is relatively new and the bike cranks like a champ. I have not reinstalled the air cleaner, throttle, but was able to use the chokes. This sure seems like a lack of fuel issue to me but wondering if it could be a electrical issue. This has the YICS ignition and I'm unfamiliar with it and any issues it may cause. I have already new tires, brakes (including master cylinder rebuild, brake flush, seat cover and fork seals so I'm into this for the long haul and would appreciate and help and input available. While thare may be other issues, the carbs need to go to church.

when i take carbs apart i find a lot of crud in the fuel tubes between the carbs and build up where they install in carbs. that stuff would block the needle valve body screens of get trapped in the assembly not letting the needles close, or clogging the pilot jet and enrichment tube. just another reason to break the rack
