Hey guys. New to xj ownership as I just bought a 1981 650. The exhaust needs replaced and I found one in great condition from an 85 700 and was wondering if it would fit. Can't find my answer on Google so I am hoping someone here could help. All input is appreciated!

    Welcome aboard!

When you say you "found one", does that mean you have it in your possession? If so, you could take some measurements to compare it to the one on your bike before trying to swap it over.

You should note that the '85 and '86 XJ700's have a different frame and I believe the angle, as well as the length of the pipes may be slightly different. The other difference it could have is where the mufflers mount at the end of the collector (the distance between them and the outlet size).

My suggestion is, if you haven't purchased one yet, is to stick with finding one that fits the '84 and earlier models.

It won't just bolt right up, if that's the question. And if the 700 is an "X" then for sure no.

The 700s used a collector-box system like the 550s and 750s; your 650 has a different configuration altogether.

Appreciate the help so far. Not sure if it helps, but here is the item for reference. The seller is currently holding it for me. Some of the 1985 700 exhausts seem to be compatible with the 1981 650 based on what I have found, which I why I am so confused by this. Again, all help is appreciated with this as I am a complete newbie with this stuff.

    No worries.

Here is a link to a good online Yamaha parts fiche. http://www.yamahapartshouse.com/oempart ... ycle/parts

Look up your bike, and look up the '85; and compare the exhaust systems, especially beyond the head pipes and how the mufflers are attached. Note the collector box on the later bike (like in the eBay listing) your frame has no provision for mounting it.

Your bike will be common to the '80~'83 650 Maxim; the 700s and virtually all of the other YICS-motor bikes had "collector box" exhaust systems.

You are likely to find aftermarket systems that claim to fit them all, 700s included, but "fit" is a relative term in that context.
