Hi I have a 82 XJ1100 and the number 4 cyl is not working 100% . I can pull the plug at idle with no change in rpm or sound. If I hold it at 3k with the wire off it will start to pop from extra fuel in the exhaust and as soon as I put it back on it stops popping. So it seems to work at higher RPM and has good power after it gets above 2500 rpm.
I know that the low jet controls this but I cleaned all the carbs when I got it running and it did change the idle speed when adjusting the needle. Anyone think it could be something other then low speed carb issues ? I also have done a full shim swap and have some valve tick on that side. What else can cause a miss at idle?

you should not be pulling the wire off with the engine running it can ruin your cdi/tci box.

Unscrew the plug wire cap and cut back the wire by 1/4". see if that changes anything.

Valve tick is a good thing.

As long as one of the plug wires on the coil has a path to ground there won't be any problems.

I was gonna say carb issue. Do you have a colortune plug? Swap that in and see if it's firing at idle, then check your sync. I had a similar issue with my 750 and was carb sync problem (butterfly valve was closing before the others).

I fixed it. I cut the wire and recapped it. That was not the problem, I then turned the needle out 3 turns and ran the bike.
I played with it for a few min turning it in a and out. Got a noted change in idle. set it at highest idle and then checked it by pulling plug wire. WORKING NOW. Must have been some shit stuck in the needle. Well it works now so all is good except it's raining and I can't ride it now.

Awesome. I won't edit my previous post but it was the low circuit still had an obstruction in the cicuit, not the butterfly closing. Total brain cart there.

Riders ride. Rain is no excuse :) Thunderstorms and tornadoes are a perfectly fine excuse however.

And an xj1100 will spool up the rear tire in the rain bald or not. And worse if your on a greasy road right after the rain starts

To be fair, a Honda Cub will spool up the rear tire in the rain if you want it to.
