I noticed that when I started driving and accelerating under load I could hear a clicking clanking sound coming from somewhere in the engine. When I drained the oil I found a metal dowel about a centimetre long stuck to my magnetic drain plug on my 1982 550 Maxim (pictures attached) what is this? How serious of a problem is it? And how serious is the repair?

Take the gear change lever and cover off and look at the star wheel the gear selector claws attach to. The selector arm and stopper arm engage with the pins. Never seen one of those loose in an engine before.

Have you had gear selection problems?

Does that bike use spring loaded roller pins 9n the one way drive for the starter clutch? ( like old hondas?)

Possibly. I thought it was highly unlikely the pins could drop out of the selector drum or the pin dowel but l don't know if the bike has the roller pins you suggest. There are also small pins in the clutch release bearing.

It does, but for one to fall into the sump would mean that the starter clutch has cracked clean in two. That would be very noticable.

The bike seems to shift normally. Sometimes after I stop I have small problems shifting into first but nothing major. It makes the noises when accelerating from a stop or driving slowly in low gear.

Yes the pin is not out of the selector drum.

is it not the actual magnet which sticks into the drain plug?

I don't believe so? The plug still sticks to stuff without that little dowel and the noise the engine is making makes me think it's a transmission bearing. I have a sneaking suspicion it's a piece of the roller bearing on the main transmission axle (part no: 93311-42045-00 https://www.partzilla.com/product/yamaha/93311-42045-00). The part looks like it has the same kind of metal dowels acting as bearings from the research I've been doing. I'm hoping someone will have seen this before to confirm.

How would it get out of the cage with the transmission shaft running through it? Does look like it though.

so is there another dowel like this in place on your drain plug? If not then that’s where it belongs. Is the dowel magnetic?

rollers in bearings tend to have smooth rounded ends, not sharp edges like this
