I have an '85 700x that won't turn over. My battery is putting out 12v, solenoid clicks when the button is pushed, got 12v at the starter when the button is pushed, when I jump the solenoid with a screw driver I get no response from the starter. My connections are clean and no blown fuses. Is it possible for the starter to be toast, or am I missing something else? (The bike started fine last weekend) Any help would be appreciated!

So I banged on the starter with the end of a screwdriver, and it fired right up. From what I have searched, looks like I need to replace the brushes. Does that sound right?

Sounds about right. However, you could have and issue with the side stand switch or one of the relays. Just verify voltage at the positive cable connector (rear of starter) when you depress your start switch or jump the solenoid.

If that's good, here's a link to an awesome starter rebuild write up one of the members did a while back:

If it were that the sidestand switch was still engaged, I don't think there were would be a click at the solenoid.

If it fired up when you rapped on the starter, that's a pretty good indicator that the starter needs the attention. It wouldn't be the first time we've come across this.......

Have to be careful banging on the starter, if you break a magnet inside the field case you'll need another starter. Always tap on the end plate instead.

12.6 volts is a charged battery, 12v is sad.

Right, the battery is weak at "only" 12v. Still sounds like the starter needs attention.

Make sure the battery has a full charge and that will help verify if that needs replacement as well.

jump your 12volts right to the bolt on the starter. just because the solenoid clicks doesn't prove it's good

Just rebuilt the starter and all is right with the world! Thanks to those of you who post advice for us rookies. Through this site I have shimmed the valves, done the brakes, rebuilt the starter and replaced the exhaust gaskets. Now I just need to ride.
    Thanks again
