81 Maxim 750, is there supposed to be a tube in the front?

First of all, this forum! So happy to have found you guys! I've had this bike sitting in my garage for 2 years, wasn't really sure I was going to ride as I didn't have a license. Last year a friend hooked me up with a free M.O.S.T. class. That's all it took, I got the bike going (still have a lot to do) and put new tires on so I could pass inspection.

Doing the front we found a tube, is that supposed to be there? The rear doesn't have one and I see no reason why the front needs it. When we got the tire and tube in, the tire didn't seem to seat properly, the front has a small, but noticeable bounce when I ride. You can even see on the tire where the bead seems to go deeper into the rim than the rest of the tire.

So, if I can ditch the tube, any idea on what I need for a valve stem? I found one on revzilla that the site says will fit "most wheels with 11.3MM (0.453" to 0.625" inch) diameter valve stem hole". Is this close to the right size?

    Thanks!

Everything you need can be purchased by clicking on the icon on the top corner of this page. You won't find a single person on this forum who wouldn't give Len (xj4ever) a 10 out of 10 rating on product quality and customer service. Click the link (http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/forums/xj4ever-supporting-vendor.23/) and you'll find what you're looking for. I'm assuming the stock aluminum wheels are still on the bike. There should not be tubes in them.

If a tubed tire was mounted then a tube may have been fitted. Sometimes a person will fit a tube to a tubeless tire if there is a small hole in the tire and they don't want to be bothered to fix it with a patch. Sometimes a person fits a tire of the wrong width and uses a tube as a rim-lock (which is a really bad idea).

If it were mine I'd ditch the tire altogether and get a tubeless tire of the correct size.
