I seem to have a very small leak coming from the very bottom of the bypass valve cover on my bike, not sure what is causing it. Any input is appreciated.

I was talking about the cover for the oil filter. I've seen the bolt was called a bypass valve so I thought that might be the name. :?

WELCOMEto the site. What your talking about is the oil filter bolt, and yes it has a bypass valve in it. Go to your local auto parts store and get an aluminium crush washer, mush like the copper ones on your brake lines. And replace the one between the BOLT and the filter cover. That SHOULD stop the leak.

Wait, whoa, NO. There is no washer between the bolt and filter cover; don't add one.

There is an o-ring on the bolt itself; that is what keeps it from leaking there.

More likely, the leak is coming from the big o-ring (the oil filter housing-to-engine block seal) and migrating forward to drip from the bolt.

When you change your oil, get a FRAM or WIX filter; they come with both o-rings. (Ref #5 and #6 in the diagram.)

Your right fitz. Its the drain bolt that has the aluminum washer.

I just put a new wix filter with the O rings in 800 miles ago. Maybe it's the one on the bolt? I'll get it opened and check them both out, thank you for the responses.

I am jump starting this old thread- because I am doing my first oil change on my 82 xj750j. Long time reader of these posts, and you guys are a great resource. Usually I send it to the dealer. My question, as I now wrestle with a stripped bypass bolt--- What is # 15 in the diagram? It looks like some kind of set screw? The main drain bolt at the front of the oil pan on my bike does not have that. Has the stock bolt been replaced with something aftermarket on my bike?

    Maybe, maybe not.

SOME, not all, Yamahas of the era had the screw in the center of the drain plug. Not sure why.

The #15 is a magnet on the other end, I never took mine out. Just take #14 out
