I just installed my carbs on the 1100 and I did a sync and tryed to colortune. The colortune plug has the electrode way inside of the threaded tube so the cylinder would not fire properly. I gave up on that. I just backed the mixture screws out so the idle would pick up and I would go to the next carb. It runs pretty good but if I crack the throttle quickly it hesitates and bogs. If I twist the throttle slow it revs right up. Then if I rev it up a few times and close the throttle it dies. It seems lean and I have the mixture screws at 4 turns out. Float levels are set on the bench wet (with gasoline) right at the bowl screw washers. Plug gap is at .028

I put new jets in 112.5 mains and 47.5 pilots.

I'm just not sure I should go out more then 4 turns on the mixture screws. I would think at some point the mixture screws are open as far as the pasages will alow fuel to go through.

Just for background here. The carbs came off because I needed to replace the throttle shaft seals. I pulled the one out on the #4 carb and it was so hard I squeezed it and it shattered. So when I took them off I found rust in the float bowls and they got a good cleaning with carb dip first and then the Ultra Sonic cleaner from Harbor Freight. Washed out with hot water and blew out with lots of compressed air. I set up a jig to hold them and did the wet float level check. It was right on spec. While the carbs were off the valvel cover came off and I checked the valves. ALL Ok and within spec.

    Thanks for your imput.

How thorough did you clean the emulsion tubes?

Hey MN, I was just looking at your gallery & you have far too many bikes, you should send me that 1100.

    Re: 82 1100 carb ?

To start with the carbs were pretty clean to start with. Not Perfect due tot the rust in the float bowls. It was like a fine dust and I blew most of it out with compressed air. So I know the throttle shaft seals were toast. I completely took them apart. and soaked the bodys and float bowls in carb dip for an hour or so. Pulled them out looked nice and clean. Washed with hot water and blew evey tube, orfice, passageway twice. Then I had picked up the Harbor Freight Ultra Sonic Cleaner. I dropped in the carb bodys one at a time in the Simple Green and Water mix at 80/20. Then ran the cleaner at least 4 times at the longest setting 480 sec. When I got all of them done the water was almost black. I then washed again with hot water and blew out everything twice again. These are ready for surgery now. I put them back togeather inspecting every part under my bench lighted magnifier (Light with big magnifing glass in the middle) the emulsion tubes were polished and a torch tip cleaner run through the holes and blown out with air. The slide bores were polished and every part was installed and double checked. Bench sync using a stip of a business card and then Float levels checked on my jig that we made for holding the carb rack level and fuel tube to fill the carbs. The floats are set withthe clear tube at the float bowl screw washer. I was really trying to get these exact as possible. I then installed on the bike and synced (Wizard way No YICS tool) at first. Decided that since this bike is a low mile bike and the passage is clean from carbon I would cool it down and install the YICS tool that I bought from Len and give that a try. I adjusted it up to my four gauge vacuum sync set up and it came out perfect. We then went to adjusting tbhe mixture screws. For some reason my colortune was not working right so we pulled that out and went to the mixture screws. I started at 2.5 turns out and I could tell by the way it was running during the sync it was lean. I then adusted all to 3 turns out. Better but not right yet. Then went to 3.5 turns out and it made little difference. Kept going out to 4 turns now and I stopped. Nice smooth idle and revs up but if you try to crack the throttle fast it stumbles and won't rev. If you rev it up quickly and close the throttle it dies. But you hit the start button and give it a little gas and it fire right back up and idles rough for a sec and its ok. I think its still alittle lean and was wondering with the mixture screws at some point they will be out as far as the passages it regulates will flow. Should I go more and see what happens or is it time to go to the next pilot jet size and go from there. It has a 47.5 stock jets in there now. Wonder what the next size #50 would do to the mixture adjustments. I also think the factory had the jets set on these bikes on the lean side to meet emmissions of that time.

Well I figured it out. The fuel I was using was in a gas can I had in my garage for at least 2 months maybe longer. I went and got some fresh fuel in the bike and it runs like new. I'm going to re sync and I'll try to color tune again and see what happens.
