So I guess if I'm going to be buying a new horn anyway, I may as well upgrade to some better ones as I've read that even if I replaced them with another working original, I would be rather unimpressed still.

However, I do want to keep my bike looking relatively stock and don't want a huge boner if a horn looking really out of place.

So if you guys could post pics of your aftermarket horn set-ups, and what you needed to do to make them work (install relays, extra wiring, etc.) I would be greatly appreciative!

My bike (83 maxim 750) has them currently under the gas tank facing to the sides.

    Thanks guys!!

    Chris

Fiamm Blasters (high and low tone) + a relay and fuse.

There should be more info/pictures in my DIY Electrical Post in my signature. FYI those horns should be used with a relay and they are LOUD without being huge.

EDIT: I have a fairing that mostly hides the horns. If you flipped the left to right horns so they both point inward, they would be even less visible.

Harbor freight has chrome auto horns (plastic) cheap (under $20) relay included wire to existing horn wire. I put them on my bike and they are loud! and it sounds like a car, not a whimpy beep beep. Mounted them to the stock holes. They have a high and low tone.

Older two tone airhorn on a XJ1100. Mounted to the original horn location, only part needed was a 3/4 spacer to keep the new horn off the frame. Horn relay mounted near fuse box.

I would like to do a horn too! The air horn is sweet! The stock one is really weak, whe riding around 5,000 rpm's, can barely hear my own horn lol

    Not Very Safe!

One well know issue with the dynacoils is their size -- they are bigger than stock OEM... as a result you can buy a turn-signal relay relocator-tab (because in order to fit in the larger coils you must grind the tab off the frame where the relay "hangs" on a large rubber gromit...

I bought the optional relocator tab and re-hung the turn relay unit off the right side front coil mounting nut...

It leaves you with the option to swing the relay in about a 90-degree arc under there under the right-side coil. Here is what it looks like from the left side of the bike looking up under the frame at the relay (under the coils) -- the not-in-focus bolt left foreground is for the horn.

While using as many position options as possible for the relay, I still couldn't get my OEM horn under there without jamming into the relay...

ONE Solution (among other options)? -- The new horn below -- Cost $9.99, is dramatically smaller and much lighter, draws 1.5 vs. 2.5 amps, and fits nicely into the smaller space without hitting the relay --

However, the new smaller unit is rated at 100db, while OEM is rated at 105db -- It is higher pitched. To my ear, it sounds just as loud and maybe more "piercing". I don't know the law, and I hope do not have an issue with inspection...

I don't have a good close up of this horn in place -- but you can see it in this pic

Most every autoparts store has them in the horn section. They are available in chrome or black.
Mine is similar to this one.

You could just get a couple of cheap after-market horns and mount as per the originals - as I did. Standard wiring etc...

Bob, what size of bolt is that, for the bracket? I just picked up a blaster on sale at princess auto (10 bucks!), to replace my very wimpy stock horns. Gotta love xjbikes.com!
