I already sent out the money order, so I imagine I'll find out once I get the new ones.

What I did in the meantime was clean up the rings on the rotor with some 1000 grit sandpaper (they needed it, it seems), reinstalled the existing brushes, put on the new seal/gasket for the cover that I had made up, and fired up the bike.

Then I took out the electrical troubleshooting chart from the XJCD that I had printed out, grabbed the multimeter, and measured across the battery terminals at 1000, 2500 and 5000 rpm. Apparently I'm charging just fine, thanks.

    Bingo!
    We have a Bingo.

There you go. Nice to know you won't be leaving yourself stranded someplace because you didn't get in there and do a simple bit of checking and maintenance.
