But there are some that won't. NY is one that, for the most part, won't. There are SOME provisions, but quite rigorous lots of hoops to jump through such as:
Exhausting every way to contact PO
    Bill of sale
    Photos of bike/car/etc....
    Photo/tracing of VIN
    Forms to fill out
    Notarized statements
    Etc.... To name a few

If its still in the system, you have other stuff to do yet for replacement title. If its been purged, you still have to jump through the hoops.

After a few months of no updates, this bike is finally getting some attention. Today I removed the exhaust, gas tank, starter and loosen the engine so it will pivot to get the airbox in.

Unfortunately I ran out of light and I still have to remove the carb boots. This will have to wait until tomorrow when I can actually see what I am doing.

There were more bolts than I thought to get this stuff out and loose but I am hoping that the engine does not have to come out to get airbox in.

image.jpg So, today I was able to slide the airbox in after removing a bunch of stuff.

It seems to be stuck and not wanting to go all the way in. The only thing that seems to be holding it is the wiring harness.

For the gurus, look at the picture. Is the wirinng harness suppossed to be routed inder the small cross bar?

If I need to re-route it is gonna be a PITA just to get that airbox all the way back in.

Yes on under. Keep wiggling, you'll get it.
Looks to me like you have part of the harness wedged beteen the airbox mount and the air box. Look at the little cutout in the center between the slotted hole and the white-wrapped part of the harness.

Thank you Moe, I had to get the battery tray loose to be able to wiggle the airbox. Between the battery tray out of the way and a heat gun I finally wiggled it in place.
For a minute I felt like playing tetris, once the airbox was in place sliding the starter was a matter of patience. Something that took 45 seconds to remove it took me 5 minutes the get in.

I ran out of daylight but hte box is in place, the rubber boots are in place on both ends of the carbs. The next step is to set the carb bowl levels and install the stock airbox.

I am hoping with this I can get it running. IF that happens I will be very motivated to check brakes and other neglected maintenance.

Read in another thread you might be considering buying another bike that's already road worthy. Why? What's preventing you from finishing one of the bikes you have like this one?

The short answer is a 3 year old and what fools call the full time job (don't have kids).

Right now with this bike I still have to make sure that carbs are super clean running into the issue of the carbs passing the "clunk" test but once I assemble them, if I push the pistons up they do not come down at the same speed so something is slowing them down and I need to clean/polish them.

Once that is done I need to check the valves, replace gasket, doughnuts, sync the carbs, color tune, and still have to check brakes in hope that everything else works.

If that is the case I think Hogfiddles is going to win unless he:

    a) never dies
    b) holds the largest XJ giveaway in history
    c) I win the 1.5 billion jackpot tonight

Neither one is very likely to happen...

Back to our regular schedule, I have been trying to get the carbs to function as they should, one of the slide pistons will stick no matter what. I have tried cleaning, polishing the piston and the bore without luck. I am starting to think that the rubber on that piston might be too deteriorated and not pliable enough that is making the piston hold up and stay open.

I did move the diaphragms/piston around (not the spring) and the symptoms followed. I may try to get a replacement and hope that it fixes the issue. I did look for any holes in the rubber but they seem solid.

I gave it one last try and went back to polish the piston and bore real well. This time all pistons passed the clunk test, once I installed spring and carb hats they all came down at the same speed and no real hesitation other than the vacuum resistance, moving on to the next step... Getting the floats wet set. Not looking forward to what seems a messy process.

    Moving on!

I went out there and checked valve clearances... no wonder why the PO said it would run really rough until it didn't run. Here is what I found:

    Exhaust clearances: 0.08 - 0.12 - 0.08 - 0.09
    Intake clearances: 0.15 - <0.04 - 0.13 - <0.04

It got dark on me (driveway shop) so tomorrow I will have to go out and get shim numbers and swap/hit hogfiddles for a swap.

    I will keep you posted.

Well that'll do it. Sometimes I wish that either hydraulic valve lifters had never been invented, or that they were better suited to high RPM applications.

And... Once I was almost ready to get back to working on these projects we found out that we are expecting our second child.. yay!!! The bikes are going to have to wait a few more years to get done... maybe by the time they go to college I will have time for the wrenching hobby.

I grew up in a 860 sq ft house. Two parents, two kids, a cat and a dog, and mom said there was plenty of room for more people (she grew up with 8 siblings in a 1,000 sq ft home). There is always room :)
