another tank swap question

I just picked up an XJ900, and I am looking to modify it. I want to lower it a bit, cut the frame under the seat support and put the seat and tank (bars/gauges/side covers) from a '85-86 Maxim 700 (or Virago)

Does anyone know if the tank will fit. I tried to put the 750 seca tank on it, and it kind of fit. It was about 1/4 inch short(no biggy) and the frame rails hit just before the mounting bolt. There was plenty of room there, so I think a few 'speed thunks' could modify the tanks underside to fit fine. I am thinking, if the tank from the maxim or virago will fit an '82 seca, it should be able to work on the 900.

Anyone every try, or have the bikes to give it a shot?

I haven't done anything yet. I just picked up the bike yesterday. I am not sure what I will do with the bike, but I really like the 900 engine, and the looks of the 700 Maxims with the teardrop tank, chrome case gauges and two piece looking seat. I am wanting a super fast cruiser. I am short, so I like my bike close to the ground. The one thing I don't like about the XJ900 is the brake disks. They are hollow vented, instead of solid slotted. I have a 16 rear wheel, and I am thinking about putting that on and going back to the rear drum brake. (I rarely use the rear brake anyway).

I'm open to ideas. This bike is rough, but running. I will be doing a frame off resto on it after I figure out where everything goes.

 

unless you dont ride much, or go over 25mph dont put a 700 tank
in with a 900 motor.
i get 50mph with my 700n and i HATE the 3 gal tank.

i would love to go for a multi-state ride but who wants to plan their trip
solely around fuel stations?

i put 1000 miles a month and more so beleave me, having to fuel all the time sucks.

that 900 will drain the tank just warming up in the morning, lol.

but if you do swap it out pm me i may buy your old tank and enjoy a real ride for once.

 

The old tank has a big hole rusted in it, no petcock, and a broken cap. That is partly why I am looking for another tank. It is also real long. I will be giving it to my brother to see if he can do anything with it. He is going to be taking welding classes this spring.

I am not really sure what I am going to do with it yet. I did see a nice looking FJ1300 on a link yesterday, I may try and mimic that look.

I am also wondering if a set of 5 gal fat bobs will look good. I have access to a set I can temperately mount to check that out. I would just have to weld on some mounts.

I am open to just about any ideas. The biggest thing I want to do is get it closer to the ground. I am short, and the bike is a bit tall for me.
