Sounds like you've got a big shed, lol. Would love an RD350 in my shed. Hope the warmer weather gets you motivated and projects on the roads.

the bug shed bit.....I wish!!!

Yep the warmer weather always help. It's been around 25 everyday here and the sun is starting to set much later, giving you a little time to play around after work.

I started working on the 750s some time ago and gor side tracked and beleiving that this was going to deplete the limited funds allocated to the bikes. In my greatest wisdom (stupidity) I felt that the 350 was really going to be a quick pull down and tidy up and back together much quicker than the 750. Well as we all know too well, one the strip down has begun......you may as well do this and then you may has well do that ....and so it goes until when it is too late, you realise that you are in a full nut and bolt rebuild!!!

So the plan now is to finish the 350 while tinkering mildly with the 750 in between waiting for parts etc...

And so I dream on!!!!!

Yes ken, You have done an excellent work there and should be very proud. Also like the photo of your 650. I am thinking of replacing the dash on one of the 750 with one similar to yours.

How you guys doing? Glad that ive found this site. Theres a lot of parts up for grabs here but ive found none in Australia, where do you all get your parts from?

G'day Greg. Welcome to the site....glad you found us. Lots of great info and knowledge on hand to keep your bike on road.

XJ parts are not something you will find in abundance in Sydney. Most of the bits and pieces that I need are brought in from the states. I keep an eye out literally buy anything that comes my way as I am sure to need them sooner or later. I have three of these buggers too try to finish off and luckily for me, they came with an abundance of parts to keep me going. The mate I got the bikes from used to run a motorcycle courier company, so he had spares just to keep the fleet on the road. I inherited the spares he had left over when he sold the business.

Right now I am hunting around for a lower fork leg and not getting much success at it. May have to bring one in from the states.

I am also in Sydney not far from Parramatta, where about are you located? What condition is your bike in?

Hi Greg, and welcome to the site. Yep if want to know something, someone on here has probably been their and done that. Parts, try Find-a-part wreckers search site, there are a few bikes around being wrecked, or for new parts check with a Yamaha dealer then compare the price with XJ4EVER (add at the top right of your screen), Chacal has all the bits at a good price and shipping to Oz is pretty quick and reasonably priced.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. Id say ill be hanging around here a little while soaking in plenty of info. Im in Blacktown.

Although ive had a few road bikes in the past, ive mostly dabbled in trail bikes, 70s 80s ITs and YZ and Montesa. The last few months ive had an erg to get myself a bike to cruise around on. Been looking around for a CB or xs as i used to own a CB750 four but, man, the prices on them are outrageous, and the xs. So when i came across an XJ750 at a price i could afford, i thought why the hell not! Gees, ive never known just how cool these bikes actually are. Im now stoked that i own one.

After 3 months of researching and looking quite a few misses and close buys, (CB, XS) i finally popped on a XJ on ebay this week. If you guys are like me and constantly search for stuff in your interests, you may have seen one for sale advertised at Windsor. After a few discussions with the guy i decided to have a good crack at it and won it for $900. It was owned by an old bloke who use to run it on the track and kept the bike well maintained up till the last two years. Since, its been sitting in the shed. He tells me the bike has Police mods and a few others to suit him for his track riding. He kept a bit of a log in the service manual which ive been looking over the last couple of days.
Matching numbers through out. A little rust in the tank but one elsewhere.

Ok, it was very hard to start. With some fresh fuel is ran rough, probably on 3 cylinders. Shot down the road and installed some new plugs, bingo, 5 -10 seconds on the starter and its running not too bad with a little choke. Revs at 90% smooth so im stoked on that. Ill put some fresh oil in the engine tomorrow so that should make it a little happier.
Ill order a carbie kit and give them a good clean and buy a new clutch, seems to be nothing left to adjust and i can feel a slight jump into 1st. Apart from that theres not much else engine wise. Exhaust is good, 4 into 1. Shaft has been reconditioned. A few wires to sort out a good clean and the brakes are new.

He has moved the gear and brake leavers back about 8 inches. Luckily there was no welding or hacking done. (neat job) He gave me most of the original parts, but theres some bits and pieces missing.

Things i need to get it back to stock

Rear foot brake pedal leaver. 5G2-27211-00-00
Footrest assembly bracket L & R as on XJ750RJ 1982 5G2-27410-00-R4
Shift Rod for the gear lever. 4K0-18115-00-00

So if anyone has these....
Im eventually going to put in an order at PowersportsPlus but ill wait a little just to make sure i dont miss anything.

Ill keep you posted.

They are off my flood bike so who knows.

Hi, we are not far apart. I am live in Greystanes but my actual house and bikes are in Camden way.
I did see the bike for sale and iyt had been advertised some time ago. Didn't quite know what to make of it, so I left it alone. I already have three to worry about :? :? :? aand I also have my RD350LC I need to finish before I get back to the XJs. Happy to see though that it has worked out quite well for you.

I need to clean up all of my parts and I may have a spare set of footrest assembly....will also check.

I would be interested to have a look at your frame where the front fairing bolts on to the headstock. i had a new fairing made for one of the bikes, but I have not used it as yet as I am not 100% sureabout the wel slug on the headtube. If your bike is mobile maybe we can meet somewhere for a coffee and compare notes.

 

A move from Mt Druitt to Qld sounds like a good one....although no good if your bike got damaged in the floods. Where abouts are you in QLD? I thought I read a thread not so long ago where you had just acquired a bike ...I might be mistaking though.

Yes I am lloking for some bis and pieces for my 12/82 XJ750. Both side lower fork legs to be precise and don't really care as to their conditions as they would need stripping down and new tubes in any case. I am also looking for th seat latch on both sides (the part that sits on the frame as well as a tank. So What ever you have, i would appreciate if you let me know.

Hi all, another 1981 XJ650RJ in Werribee, Melbourne. Just got the bike back on the road after a year off, from the changes to the road worthiness rules I will not be de-registering the bike again!

I even joined the VJMC with historic registration in mind but decided to register for the year anyway!

Still happily using Morey oil stabiliser with great results, just added brand new carby diaphragms from www.JBMindustries.com just $20 per slide, bikes runs very sweet now.

I also own a Yamaha FJ1100 which is nowhere as reliable as my baby XJ!

Hows the parts hunting going, I have some bits in my shed that I can check through.

I'm looking for an exhaust system for the XJ900 , does anyone know of a 4into 2 system available here?

Yes still after some legs and some seat latches for the 750.

Would appreciate if you could look through the shed. Iam in Sydney and occasionally ride to the Hunter Valley ....so N,Castle is not far at all.

Hi Guys, just joined up after finding this site. Just about to get my old XJ900P back on the road after a couple of years off it. Converting back to standard fairing and repainting will be amongst the first things to do. Its still registered so no RWC issues thankfully.

A question if I may, straight up.

I have a factory style fairing and bracket that I have had for about 20 years, but when I put them on today I can now work out how to mount the instrument cluster, I vaguely think I might remember another bracket, but can not find another one at this stage. Is there a bracket off the forks to the instruments I am missing?

Oh the bike is an '85 model, had it since sold by QPS in 1988, now also ride a big white FJR1300P.

With the frame mounted fairing. There will be a seperate mounting bracket for the gauge cluster.

The bracket will look like this.

I've finally finished restoring my second XJ750RL
Now number 242 sits besides number 008

Who said these XJ750RL's were rare?
I know only 200 came to OZ and only about 800 worldwide way back in 1983
But I just found out a friend of mine has two more RL's sitting in his shed.
and only today i found another one on Fleabay in perth.
