Bike shuts down when warm.

I have an 83 xj750. I have had a problem a couple times last season when it was hot and once this season. It seems that after a goodly ride something seems to be heating up and killing all my power temporarily. The bike shuts down, the lights(including headlight) shut off, and it doesn't want to fire. Usually if I let it sit for a couple minutes it will fire right back up and may be fine for the rest of the day. Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing it??

 

Power regulator, TCI unit, pick-up coils, ignition coils, all are possible with the heat. Intermittent opperation is not an uncommon symptom. Sad fact is that troubleshooting these issues is best accomplished by substitution, which is expensive. Do you have a bottle of Dust off or other compressed cleaning air? I'd take that along on the next trip and when the problem rears it's ugly little head, shoot the suspected part with the spray. It will cool it straight away and you should have an answer pretty quick. You can ohm out the components and look for odd values as well, but this is takes time and will not show if the component is breaking down thermally. Best I can do for you Dave, anyone else?

 

Start simple. Look in the fuse box. Sounds like a problem with the Main fuse line. Do you still have glass tube fuses? Escpecially if you are losing lights as well as ignition.

Sometimes when the wiring heats up it can cause those pathetic standard fuse lugs to expand and give a bad connection. Also known a few "dry" connections in the fuses themselves. Worth replacing as they are cheap enough.

Changed my fusebox to blade type last weekend as I had tiny peices of wire twisted around mine to keep a good contact on them.

 

I don't really have a fuse box, just a bunch of inline blade fuses. The last time this happened before I could even come to a complete stop I dumped the clutch and the engine fired and all my power came back, but not until the engine restarted.
