85 XJ700, runs great for about 5 miles, good power etc, slow to turn or stop sign and it will die out and is hard to start. Any suggestions are appreciated..

Is there actually gas in it?

Do you have a inline fuel filter?

If yes remove it and try again.

Pull a fuel line and verify flow into a can.

Try it on PRI, no problems then check your petcock and vacuum lines for proper operation.

try riding with the gas cap up just a bit. Works? Plugged vent.

Could also be a plugged riser on the petcock inside the tank.

Or a plugged line/fuel inlet in the float bowls. Or improper float levels.

Could also be plugs fouling. Pull your spark plugs and check for sooty black color. If so, you are running really rich.

You could be operating of the top of a bad Battery.

Or, the Battery is good and your System isn't charging it.

Run the Bike at 2,800 rpm's.
Measure the Voltage at the Battery.
    +14.2V -to- +14.5V = Pass / OK

    Lower Value
Less than +14.2V indicates System not providing adequate Charging Current.

    Investigate.
    Inspect Alternator Brushes
    Measure
    10mm or less = Fail > Replace.

I had similar issues on my FZ. Only it was after a long run and she was hot. Slow down or stop for traffic, and she'd stutter and stall.
Turns out is was the electrical system. (It was a new battery, same that I swap between 3 bikes) Brake lights on would cause idle to drop. What I REALLY noticed was when my rad fan kicked in is when it would die. Idle just didn't have the juice to keep everything going AND a good spark. You're probably running rich down in low rpms as well, which is why you need a really good spark. So, you try to restart, too much fuel, plugs are fouled and your juice just isn't enough.
TIP: if in a hard start situation, if you have a fuse for your headlight, pull it.
Gives you a bit extra juice.
Put it back when you're done tho. ^^
