I suppose the carbs and carb-related issues are the most frequently discussed items at this forum....
I have yet another question about them that I did not find an answer for.

In a previous topic I mentioned buying a second XJ650 to have spare parts 'on stock' and today I started dismantling it.
The first thing I took apart were the carbs that were completely 'gummed' and started cleaning them.

I noticed that the 'jetting' was different from that of my 'running' XJ650.

They are Hitachi HSC32 5N9 supplied with a 112 main-jet and a 43 pilot-jet and that seems to be in accordance with the factory-specifications for this type.

    So far, so good...

    Now here's my question.

I noticed the so called 'jet cover' is missing in all four carbs. The jet cover is the part that 'covers' the main- and pilotjet and can be seen when removing the diaphragm.

I suppose there are two possibilities explaining the absence of these covers:

    - they were never there and this is a normal situation considering the 'jetting' of these carbs

    - they were in but a previous owner removed them. But that raises another question: what might be a reason for someone to remove these covers?

One of the great mysteries of life.
Some of these carbs came with the cover plate & some without, it doesn't seem to make any difference.
With the jetting, did the carbs come from a 750?

    XJ650Rj 110 and 40 for me too.
Sounds like these carbs were jetted for pods and a header.

Does this mean I can not use them on my 'standard' XJ650?

As is the case with many of our machines, I don't know the history of this 'spare-cycle'.
The only thing I know is I took them of a standard Maxim XJ650 with VIN 5N8-023169

Your bike may have been jetted for use in the mountains, it's jetted just 1 step richer, your bike might like it.
Go for it, then read the plugs.

Knowing that Yamaha tuned these things right at the extreme lean edge I'm seriously considering building out my spare rack of carbs with jets one click fatter and seeing how they run. I personally like my plugs just a BIT darker on WOT and mains are the only way to change that. Just considering for now...

Thanks to all of you for your kind reactions and patience!

By 'thanks for your patience' I mean:

The art is 'finding' answers instead of 'searching' for them

When, after having posted my question, I searched for '112 and 43' I found numerous topics about jet-issues that directly or indirectly answered my questions....
