changing fork seals???

can anybody help me out? i need to change the fork seals on my 83 400 maxim and need to no how. can i just un bolt the fork tubes from the crown and slide the tubes out? e mail me back at mccrae_mx3@hotmail.com thanks john

 

It will most likely be just like the other XJ's. There are 2 400's one is a two cylinder and the other is a 4. I belive the 4 cylinder was only sold in Europe. There is a damper rod that holds the fork leg to the stanchion of fork tube. You will need an allen or hex key wrench for the bolt on the bottom of the fork leg which threads into the damper rod. Inside the stanchion tube is the other end of that bolt or the head of the damper rod. It will need a 17 or 19mm hex head bolt to engage the hex head on it and keep it from spinning so you can actually free the bolt. A sparkplug socket turned upside down and then attached to an extension will work. It usually takes about 3 socket extensions to get all the way down. Measure the hex end of the sparkplug socket with a 19mm wrench to see if it is the right size. For the 17mm you will probably have to use a bolt with a 17mm head and double nut it to hold it in a 17mm socket.
