If you do not know you have two choices; You can guess, or you can ask someone who knows ..
    I choose to ask.

On my XJ600 the exhaust system is rotten. The branch pipes, ie the bends out of the engine down to the collector, are reasonably healthy but the collector itself has gone fishing.

I suppose the connection between branch pipes 1 and 2 across to branch pipes 3 and 4 is there for some reason, but what happens if I simply skip the collector and let the 4> 2 system become two separate 2> 1 instead?

What happens? A slight power loss, and perhaps a noticeably less-snappy engine.

    Ok, thanks.
I might have to live with that if my (poor) welding repair breaks...
