Whoa there Pilgrim. This started as a carb thread and now you're convinced the dialectric grease is at issue.

I think you're chasing your tail.

I think your problem IS (now) electrical, but not TCI or dialectric grease related. I think you have a: a bad or loose or cracked connector, quite possibly in the fusebox, b: a flaky, dirty or failing sidestand switch, c: some sort of other problem with the "safety cut out circuit."
Locate and unplug your safety relay as a temporary troubleshooting measure. That will eliminate everything in that system, if the bike then starts and runs fine you know where to look.

I agree with Fitz. Sounds like a bad component or bad connection somewhere. I would clean all the plugs and check them for tightness. You can gat a small blade in to release the connector from the plug one wire at a time to clean and tighten it. I know it will take a few hours to do but you'll be better off sorting out your wiring and making sure its all good.

    Tks, guys.

Yah, bigfitz. At first I thought it would be a carb problem. Should have left my options open and named the thread "starting problem" instead. Figured it would be better to stick with this thread anyway since it has all the troubleshooting info in it.

Yep, so I'll start checking for bad connectors. I would be surprised it is the sidestand switch since it does this only at startup, and only on the first ride of the day - never at any other time after that in the same day. The fuse box, on the other hand, looks shaky. (I'll check the sideswitch anyway, if just to make sure.)

So 2 votes against the grease being a problem. Hmmm
