The most obvious suspect is the drain plug washer. The nut takes a particular "bite" out of the soft material, and when mis-aligned, will leak.

Next - the oil level sensor is known to leak.

Others - shifter shaft seal - filter housing - side cover gaskets - middle gear drain plug.

You could stuff a piece of clean cardboard in there, then check back.

Could be anything, from a drip at the drain plug or filter housing to a minor leak almost anywhere; the collector is the bottom-most thing on the bike so it will eventually drip from there even if it has a source far removed.

im thinking the middle gear drain plug. The PO changed the oil and in the sight window it looks pretty clean. This is DARK thick oil. I am assuming i should remove the collector to get a good look?

The middle gear cavity shares the crankcase oil and if drained, looks just as light or dark as engine oil, but I notice fine silvery metallic shavings.
(WARNING - don't touch the middle gear drain plug)

Here's an idea - clean oil is leaking onto your collector, then cooking into a darker oil. Did you do the cardboard trick yet ??
