So I'm finally back home from Iraq and have gotten to play with my new 85 XJ700X a lil bit. I know I need new tires because the sidewalls are weather cracked. I'm planning on removing the tires myself and taking them to a Yamaha dealer to replace the rubber. Is there a post on here that does a good job of describing the process for removing the tires? I downloaded three different manuals online and while there good there also slightly vague. Just trying to save a hundred bones and do it myself. Also I have an issue with the horn. It aint honkin. I've looked at the wiring schematics and have no idea what I was looking at. I havent replaced the fuses with a fuse box yet so this may be whats wrong with it. Any ideas out there?

Welcome back from the sandbox! Well, the first thing I would do is go ahead and order the replacement (modern) fusebox from chacal. This way, your horn and any future electrical problems will be alot easier to troubleshoot/fix. Of course you have the fuses, wires from fusebox to horn, and the contacts under the horn button itself that could be at fault. I don't know of any relays for the horn, but someone on the site might know if there is one and where it's located. I just changed out my fusebox yesterday, it wasn't too bad, just time consuming but still fun. It's a great feeling when you're done and turn that key to see if your sh*t all still works and it does, lol. I'm sure you're anxious to ride as are alot of us who are still working the bugs out of our XJ's, but it'll be worth it!

    Peace,

    Mac

First off THANKS for your service. I recently had a horn issue and turned out to be corrosion at the horn connection. If you have a test light, use it at the horn connections. If you have power there, it eliminates everything else. Then if no power, work your way backwards thru the circuit. You can also use test light to check both sides of fuse to eliminate that. BUT you may as well go ahead and replace the fusebox, because it is notorious for problems. In my situation I had power at the horn....cleaned the blades on the horn and it was fixed. Remember, start with the simple stuff.

the horn might be broke, before you do anything, hook it up to 12V and see or hear if it blows.
are you taking the tires off or the wheels? taking the tires off the wheel is the hard part if you do that might as well mount the new ones yourself and save all the money
    good to have ya back
