Ok. New starter they said it was rebuilt 2 yrs ago...threw it in. Same thing no turn over. Ok. Found an unhooked ground on left side of bike. Hooked up no turn over.
Question 1. With key off. Should I have voltage across the solinoid? Turn key on...no voltage across solinoid.
#2. What voltage should be at the starter when start button is pushed?....I have 6. Battery at 12 with charger on it.
#3. Where does starter get power from. Key on, hit start, it closes solinoid, power from battery goes to starter....right

New starter has smooth bearing feel to it, not like crunchy one I took out.
Now I also tested it off the bike...it spins but nothing torque out of your hand type of spin.

    1) no, correct
2)is the starter connected to the wire? no) same as battery..........yes) at least about 10v
3)right but a solenoid can click but not make a good connection internally
"torque out of your hand type of spin" you used a battery charger, didn't you. try it with a good battery :)

    Starter question.
    Ohm measurements I have:
0 from solinoid to starter post.
0 from starter post to every spot on starter housing...even starter gear. Good correct? Complete circuit to ground with mounting bolts. What am I missing here? New solinoid installed. Start button cleaned. Maybe something as simple as battery. Batt. Reading is 11.75 with key on, 12off, push start button drops to 8-10???

this don't sound right, your measuring from the bolt/terminal thru the brushes thru the coils of the starter back out the other brush to ground/housing, should be something there.
but if it spins it must be there, we'll call that operator error or trial by fire :).
your battery is on the edge, can you jump it with a car battery? unhook the - terminal of the bike battery, leave it off. jumper + to the bike battery +. jumper- to the bike frame somewhere to get a good connection. hookup in this order, bike +, car +, car -, bike frame -

Ok..I realize I may be resurrecting an old thread. But here we do. I have a 82 XJ650 and am putting on a new tank. I obviously know there is a fuel and vacuum line. My question is what happens if I do not install the vacuum line? My tank came with a new petcock and obviously the old one will not fit the new tank. Am I screwed? Do I have to weld in the old petcock to the new tank?

I am hoping the vacuum is only used is the prime position or something to aid in starting

Vacuum is used only in the NOT prime positions.
The vacuum line (small one) pulls the diaphragm back to allow rule to flow in both the RUN and the RES (reserve) positions. When the engine stops, the vacuum stops, and the spring closes the diaphragm. The PRI (prime) position is a free-flowing setting to allow you to refill the bowls when you accidentally run out of gas.

    Dave Raco,

Is your new petcock on your new tank just a simple off/on ? If so, no need for vacuum line, but you will have to block off the vacuum intake port on the rubber intake manifold that the original vscuum line went to with a rubber cap.
