first i have(or think i have) a yamaha XJ 550 rk 1983. first off how do i check this to see if i do, because in trying to buy parts for my fuel petcock it does not look the same as the oem pictures (doesnt show diaphram or fuel line out). also does anyone know where i can buy a new fuel stem (in tank filter) the one place i found charges an arm and a leg, then the other arm and the other leg for shipping. its a decent bike only 9,000 miles on it, but all the rubber is just old, and the last guy who had it only thought he drained the tank i have a 2 golfball sized rust spots at the bottom of the tank that got me very familliar with the carb.

Hope you got your tank cleaned out. Rememeber to install a fuel filter. Check with Chacal or Smuckaholic to see if they have what you need. Good Luck

The fuel petcock screen is still available from Yamaha for about $13 (plus shipping of course.) Chacal (our parts guru) has aftermarket replacements that are cheaper. (PM Chacal or email info @ XJ4ever.com) There were only three MODEL YEARS for the seca 550, 1981-83. Unfortunately, manufacture date (as stamped on your steering head) will probably not match. My '81 was made in Dec '80; my '83 was made in May of '82. You can cross the VIN or do it the easy way, IF the bike is in stock enough trim: 550 Secas only came in 3 color schemes. White with red flashes, 1981. Red with silver trim, '82. Black with maroon and scarlet flashes, '83. If it's been repainted you'll have to go the VIN decoding route. All 3 are nearly completely mechanically identical (there is somethng different about the front brake on the '83 I haven't figured out yet.) Please fill out your profile, location always helps; and create a "signature" with your bike info in it. Buy a service manual if you don't already have one, and enjoy what is in my way of thinking, the "purest" of the XJs. (Chain drive and all...)
