Has damage been done?

Thinkin bout gettig this 82 650 with 10777 miles 1200.00. The owner is 79 and gas had it since 1990. He has been putting Castrol GTX oil in it which is not JASO rated....should I be worried bout that

 

No. No worries. Using the "proper oil" is a good thing and better for the wet clutches in these bikes but a bike this old and with that few miles is going to have a lot more stuff to look at, fix, up grade and adjust than the tiny bit of difference non-motorcycle rated oil is going impact. More frequent oil changes with non motorcycle rated oil is so very much better than extended oil changes with rated oil. The main issues are the wet, oil bathed clutches that can slip when oil with friction modifiers are used. Also the engine oil is in the transmissions and goes through the gears in a crushing situation that normally does not occur in engines.

No worries whatsoever.... next oil change just switch to a JASO oil and you'll be able to sleep at night.
