Parts wise I'd get the fluids and filter locally. Autozone, advance auto, napa, and some walmarts carry the oil filter. Oil-wise either use shell rotella 15-40w diesel engine oil or a good motorcycle spec. oil. Try to stay away from car oils as the have friction modifiers that destroy wet clutches. Any oil labled as "energy saving" "energy conserving" or "anti-friction" contains these modifiers.

Pretty much anything else you will have to get online or at a bike shop. There is a forum member named Chacal (XJ4ever) which has everything you can think of for these bikes at great prices. He is very knowledgeable about these bikes so he wont sell you parts you dont need or the wrong parts for the bike.

Thanks for the info and help.

I know what I'll be doing tomorrow.

I think I'm going to have to do some fuel line replacement too.

If you look closely in the picture of the bike facing left...you can see an inline fuel filter hanging out the side. It appears to be seeping a little gas....and it's sort of a reddish color? No clue. I will investigate more later.

dangerous sitting at a light stalled though. :!:

I also noticed some pinging at 50mph.

Also, Approx. how many miles can I expect to get out of a tank?

    Alright, pulled the plugs.

If I were sitting on the bike facing forward going left to right......

Spark plug 1 - slightly brown insulator, but the metal around it is black

Spark plug 2 - black and sooty (dry) on one side....whitish on the other

Spark plug 3 - white insulator, metal around it is black

Spark plug 4 - black and dry, but not as dark as 2.

    white mean lean, right?

The bike will not idle without the choke on.

From what I've read, it sounds like the carbs are dirty, and out of sync.

I noticed a touch of rust in the tank......just one little spec/spot down in the tank farther on the left. :x

I would say follow the normal XJ tips....

Replace the fuse box, add an inline fuel filter, and a sparkling Rickomatic clean and sync job...
Then you can fine tune it from there

Oh, before Bigfitz throws something at me, check your valve clearances before doing the carbs :)

When winter comes, I will be doing all of this.

For now.....I suffer though having to choke and poor performance.

There's a duplicate 650 up here for sale for $850....
Same color scheme and all, tempting..... but I have no free cash atm....

Actually 3 Secas on kijiji now and all have the 4 in 1 mod done... dammit...
The one furthest away looks the best, in great shape and for $1200

I adjusted the idle screw in attempts to get the thing to idle with the choke (Fuel Enrichment).

While it seemed to help, I still have to use the choke to keep it running.

I turned it in a ways.......but it wouldn't idle without choke.......and it wouldn't idle smoothly. ramping up and down in RPMs.

I just ended up backing it back out a little (it was backed WAY out as it was)....and just used a little choke.

It's a great bike. Go for it!! Sell some stuff. :D
