Hey all, is there anyone around the south central PA / northern Maryland willing to help with some tuning and valve check? I don't have the guages, YCIS tool. colortune, or shim tool. I'm a little nervous cracking open the head... I've never went there before. I read bigfitz's s write up on valve clearances... doesn't sound too hard, but I'm just nervous for some reason... I', definitely willing to cover gas money + take care of you... I'm just looking for someone who's been here before and has the tools.

PS I have PODS on the bike, but I'm kinda indifferent on that subject. I have an airbox, just too lazy to put it back in...

I also live in York county and I have all of the tools except the colortune, but I do not have much experience. Not sure how much help I would be. Still trying to take care of a lean condition on my bike. Also I am not familiar with the later bikes. Is your bike water cooled with 5 valve heads?

PM me if you want and maybe try to work something out.

    If you've got a 700, then you don't need a YICS tool.

    Computer: "You got it."

Trillian: "But can you fly her?"

    Zaphod: "No. Can you?"

    Trillian: "No."

    Zaphod: "Ford?"

    Ford: "No."

Zaphod: "Fine. We'll do it together."

If it is indeed an aircooled engine, don't worry -- time consuming, yes, but definitely doable. I had never done it before when I did mine, and it turned out just fine. Come on -- you can do this.

    Baltimore here.

I don't have a colortune, haven't needed it. I can tune fine without one.

I can borrow a YICS tool if needed, my 81 is non yics.

You don't take the head off to do the valves. Just the cover.

If she's rideable and you want to make the trip down I've got the space and the tools. The 4th (pistol match) and 5th (ride planned) don't work for me but other weekends I could shake loose the time.

IWIN.... she's ride-able.... though not registered, tagged, or inspected. Hoping to take care of that one soon. However, not sure if i'd trust her on a hour + ride at this point.... if you wanna make a trip up... check your pm's for more info

BigT... if you're interested in coming up too, let me know

the weekend of the 11th just opened up for me. Plans changed. So either of those days I'd make the ride and give you a hand.

(confused look) I didn't think they used YICS in that model year...

    (checks reference material)

Well, huh. I stand corrected. Carry on, then.

(You do know that Chacal has all the tools you'll need, right? YICS tools, colortune plugs, the little tool to poke open the holes at the top of the YICS passage...)

Schmuckaholic... at the moment it's a budget thing. Do I buy tools or tires so I can ride again?

Just do one thing at a time. Do the valve clearance checks first. If they all are good (and the valve cover gasket and bolt "donuts" are good) then put the cover back on and construct a manometer (or borrow gauges). Doing the work is not hard nor difficult, just take your time.
