Help! Stator replacement.

    Then if it jumps up after start , chances are your stator is ok . Agree with hogfiddles sounds like you have an ignition problem TCI or coils...look at coils see if they are cracked , if bad enough with lights out you might see some arcs ( Replaced my coils with 82 Honda CB 750 coils --replaceable plug wires big plus). Test TCI is another thing, usually swap in a new or used unit is quickest way.

    Run the bike until it shuts off, then pull the plugs and check for spark before it "cools down"

    ^ That. Pull one plug at at a time though, or you will risk damaging the TCI.

    And check valve clearances.

    Not every problem has a single cause.
