I have a 1985 Yamaha maxim xj700x. I just got her running again she had electrical issues but now she won’t idle below 3000 no matter what I do. I have adjusted the idle screw till she almost fell out in my hand and she stays at 3000 but she will go higher when I turn screw other way. Here is a list of what all I’ve had to do cleaned carbs, new rectifier, cleaned electrical connections, new starter solenoid, new plugs,

Did you do a good bench sync on the carbs? if not you need to do one. If the butterfly won't close enough it will never idle. If you are confident in your bench sync, did you do a running sync? Personally, I would do the running sync first and if that doesn't help then I would redo the bench sync. I am assuming that you have verified that there is no problem with the throttle cable or enrichment cable.

no need to start 2 threads this is not FB

try the simple things first. lube the throttle cable and properly adjust it the throttle tube needs to be removed from handle bars . inside cleaned handle bars cleaned then lube with graphite. lube cable with cable lube.
when adjusted properly the throttle on carb should be at its lowest point and a little slack in the cable, it should not be tight.
remove cable from carb holder see if the idle drops

could be cable routing. could be linkage on carbs is hanging up.

it the choke on or off when happening ?
is the choke and throttle hooked to the correct spots? are they reversed?

Yes cables are hooked to the appropriate spots there is absolutely no slack in the throttle cable at all as soon as I twist it revs so I guess that might be my culprit I’m guessing that when the previous owner changed handlebars he changed the throttle cable routing which is my culprit I took it to my buddy’s house he’s a motorcycle mechanic and he is going to look at it as he gets time I will update this as soon as I have a solution sorry about double post wasn’t sure where the best spot to post was

Also make sure to check for vacuum leaks, and make sure that the tirottle cable is really hooked to the thrittle linkage and not to the enrichment linkage. Even us experienced folks have swapped them without noticing.
