Ok guys, here's one for the collective brain trust. It's probably something simple that I'm just overlooking.

I have a '82 XJ550RJ Seca. I had gone through a complete disassemble and cleanup on the carbs followed by a year later a competent mechanic supposidely doing the same along with the sync last month. I have now started riding the bike and it starts like a dream and settles to a nice idle right around 1100 RPM. After I have been riding for about ten minutes, when I come to a stop sign or light, the bike wants to idle at about 3000 RPM and once I blip the throttle once or twice it settles back down to 1100 RPM. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Could be many things. I'd start by lubing your throttle cable. Verify that the throttle cable isn't kinked or frayed at all. Then check your throttle sleeve for any binding.

Something is hanging up the throttle cable maybe? Or it may be internal (inside the carb) and you will need to take the tops of the carbs off to see if somethings is sticking in the slides.

If it's the cable hanging up, you should feel it in the throttle when you twist, like a free spot with no tension. The throttle should have tension from zero to wide open. Also check for vacuum leaks at the intake manifolds, that'll cause irratic idling.

I have to agree with Kevineleven.
Also, if the carbs are out of synch, that will cause the idle to hang up also. Mine did that same thing until I got them synchronized and it went away as soon as I started it up. PD
