My mom and dad were in love (at one point in time)... Then I grew up and fell in love with 70 and 80 series Jap bikes. First ride was a 80 XS850 Special. I'm still looking for a triple that's as cool as that one was. Fortunately I sold it off to a good buddy of mine that happens to be my roomate at this time, so the bike is back in my home garage.
I found the site looking for info on my XJ9 project. Thought it would be a good idea to quit lurking and contribute.

I doubt if any of us "got here" in that sense in any other way than that lol :D

Well I suppose there's always alien abduction/"probing" but I don't *recall* any members being 8 feet tall with green skin, 3 fingers & huge round black eyes lol

Glad to be here! Found 2 83 XJ750's on craigslist here in Reno. Checked out the first one, it was in pieces and incomplete to boot. Too much work for me as I already have a project car I'm working on, but really wanted a summer ride. Second bike was a running midnight maxim with a blown front caliper. Got it for $500, did some parts research and here I am! Currently rebuilding the whole front brake system with parts help from XJ4ever.

As a new member I found this site on Google while trying to get advice on how to revive an old XJ that I just purchased. Was surprised (pleasantly) to see what a great resource/community you guys have here.

Had been bikeless for three years. Money was there, and I wanted a vintage (by today's standard) bike that would be a capable commute sled and fun project.

Hit Craigslist with a $1000-1500 range, looking for nightwawks, when an XJ650 Seca popped up. I'm a sucker for "Island of misfit toys" type bikes, so I was drawn to it, given the relative rarity.

I found this place while looking for reference and part resources post-purchase.

I traded an old Honda XL175 Enduro for an '85 XJ700X - and I found this site when deciding I needed to learn more about how to fix it!! I LOVE this site, and the people are helpful and awesome!! I have since been able to clean the carbs, bought parts, found helpful advice on how to go about doing my own valve adjustment - and did it!! I ended up restoring the bike and repainting it - and now it runs better than ever, and LOOKS BETTER THAN EVER ! ! I absolutely LOVE IT ! ! It's the best bike I've ever owned!! Not bad for a GIRL, huh?? ; )

I got myself an XJ in the UK and the realized how difficult it was to get parts and find people that knew much about them. It didnt take long online before Google introduced me to this site. Can't say how useful it has been and has led me to follow suite and make a bobber like some of your other members. Being my first proper bike and being a bit old and tired, she was in need of lots of work and this site has made it possible for me to take on jobs that I would have otherwise had no idea how to tackle. This site is absolutely great! I would welcome a UK corner though, I know it has been discussed before but it would help foster a group of people that could lend YICS tools and meet up etc.....

I bought a basket case, on a whim, from eBay. Found this site after a Google search.

Later in the year, when I actually start my build, I'll introduce myself and my bike properly :D

I love this site. Hands down.
I bought my 1981 xj650 max last Aug. and from then on have been goggling
Every thing I want and or need to know, and 90% of the time XJ Forum comes up!!! With great pics and answers. And a awesome group of people who seem to really want to help each other. I am new to forums and have some difficulty navigating it on my iPhone witch is why I have no prior activity, but you guys rock and are worth the frustration it takes to learn, I look forword to posting my pics and getting everyone's input. Thanks to you and Google for bringing me here.

I found the site via Yahoo search engine. Every time I had an issue, I'd surf and find someone here with the same problem and an educated answer. Pics and all :)
A friend gave me his bike, because even after handing a bunch of money to a local dealership it just wouldn't idle right. I am very grateful to have found you guys here. I didn't know if it was worth buying a manual. You guys showed me how check the valves and set up the carbs. She runs like a dream, in the driveway now. I think she's going to be a sweet ride.

I've been trolling since I bought my cursed 1982 XJ1100 Maxim by the way I can't sell it because the brakes are junk and I just spent $150.00 on Ebay for caliper rebuild kits, new pads and various parts to try and remedy the problem. There was a string on here about the spooge hole but I can't find it now, and I guess there is no rebuild kit for the rear MC? It's nice bike but has spent most of it's 18k miles of life setting in the barn. Hope to get it back on the road this summer if I can. Any brake info is greatly appreciated. I don't want to modify it, I just want it to work. So Thanks for any future help.

Hi, just joined. I had my first XJ600, an 87 model, back in the early 90s. Now I've just (two days ago) bought my second, a '91 model.

I found this site whilst searching for XJ600 bits, and am now going to search for advice on the throttle return spring...

I bought a xs400 a few years back, found this website. Sold the bike before finishing it (moving). Found a XJ550 Maxim for $250 (paid 200) not running, sitting in a garage for over a couple years, not sure whats wrong... Got the bike home and stripped it down to find several issues (carbs, wiring corrosion, and breaks in wiring). Found the website again, used some info off site. Good forums to read. Bike is now running, still no front brake, but it'll do. More worried about going than stopping I guess. I like to look at what people are changing their bikes into.

Hello all. Marcus from WA, USA. I got here by a recommendation from Yamaha Owners Club forum. I have an 82 XJZ650J Maxim that I picked up from Craigs List for about $500. I've put in at least another $500-800 in parts to get it to run right. It still isn't right and I'll be posting about it in the appropriate section. Just wanted to say HI!

Can work and my 1949 Indian will have a beautiful new Asian girlfriend beside him. I'm 6'2" and she's a bit small under me.... any advice on making her easier to ride. I'm going to have to mod her out and would love some ideas

    Mountaintrout,

I know what you are saying, I'm your size and even the big bikes are still built for the average size person. I have an XS850 and it is even too small. I use it for my highway bike. I changed the handle bars and that helped a lot. Other than highway pegs it is tough to relocate the pegs and still have ground clearance and make the shife and brake pedal work right.

    Merry X-mas everyone!
Janne is my name and I am located in Sweden.
I found this site when surfing the net for information about the XJ 650 1982 Seca, as I have one that I intend to bring back to life.
Last winter I restored a 1981 CB 750 F but as I like to both ride and restore I purchased a XJ as well, and honestly, I'm quite keen to get it on the road as it seems to be a fun ride?
At first glance, it seems more modern in its engineering compared to the one year older honda?

The things that will need some love is fork, brakes, clutch and gearbox. The gearbox is already taken care of, as there was a peace of plastic that loosened from the cam shaft tensioner, but know removed, thanks to this site! Thank you very much.
The plan is to ride the Xj the coming Sumer and restore the Honda to mint.

Hope to see you out there!

    /JR

I heard about this website through "Motolady". This biker babe blogger told me about this site so I can learn how to repair my bike on my own. I started following her blog, and reached out telling her my story about my 82 XJ650 SECA. She then told me that her first bike was the same one! From then on she was more than willing to give resources. I believe she is still a member.

I've lurked here on and off for a fair old while, after I bought my XJ. Now I have a bike problem I've joined up.....

I'm in Milton Keynes, in England. The bike is a 1981 UK spec XJ650 with a UK spec XJ750 engine. Most of it is brush painted in a lovely shade of green, hence my user name. It's a Toyota colour. I do get fools asking me if it's an army bike, because it is green. (Sigh) The colour is nearer Kermit than Khaki!

    Hello!
I found this site immediately upon researching my '82 Maxim 550J.

The only bike I've ever owned, I bought it in '90 for $700 and rode it during and after university. I moved away and left it with a friend some 16yrs ago who kept it in his basement for most of that time. Not quite 2yrs ago he delivered it to my parents' home (I'm 3hrs away) and thanked me for letting him store it all those years. Ha! It sat outside beneath a tarp (most the time) at my parents' until early January when I was able to get it home and under roof. The last couple of years have taken their toll while it hasn't been started since '98.
It's a project, to be sure, and this place will no doubt serve as an important resource.
    Many thanks and kind regards!

Recently bought my 1983 Midnight Maxim from the local APF ( motorcycle wrecking yard ) and started looking for info on it and this site pops up everywhere. She runs great but the headcover gasket has a small leak and the starter clutch is going out. Of course she needs the usual cosmetics like paint and whatnot. But for $695 I couldn't pass her up. Anyway, figured I'd say "Hi".

It's fine in open woodland, so long as there's a nice brown tree trunk behind it, but park it in a field, walk away twenty yards and look back- it's gone! 8O :D

One thing I like is that ever since I painted it green, lots more people come up and talk to me. Many of them not bikers. I didn't get so much of that when I tried (and failed) to keep my bike all shiny. I don't understand it, but it's cool. :?

Which part of Australia are you in?

Google search worked for me, I got my XJ750 Seca and then Googled just that, XJBikes was the first web page I found. Been here searching for data and rebuilding my Seca ever since. Next step is a carb balance and then it's registration and inspection time.......... WooHooo

Just rolled a non running 1982 XJ750 (I'll take your help to figure out how to be more specific...) off my truck that a fella I know from work needed out of his garage. Although I think it was mostly outside as you can see from the first picture - I was googling how to remove the tank, etc so I could drain the old gas out of the carbs and give it a try. He told me I could part it out or whatever and just give him $100 when I made some money from it... $100 and I have the title : -)

Since it is so complete and cleaned up so easy, maybe I'll just keep it whole.
