This site comes up a lot whenever I search for Yamaha 'how to' as well as general XJ info.

I bought an 82 XJ650 Seca and began looking for info via google and this was one of the top sites. So much amazing information here and obviously a great community of XJ owners.

I arrived like others, via google

Just bought a '82 XJ750 Maxim. Will keep it stock to take advantage of B.C.'s ICBC collector plate program. Cheap insurance on anything 25 years or older. Without collector plates I'd be paying over $1000/year

Signing in from Corpus Christi, Texas. I just purchased a 1983 XJ750K Maxim(as my research leads me to believe at least) for a whopping $350. It has the YICS emblems on the engine side plates, and if I do say so myself, it is in pretty decent condition.

I intend on keeping it stock, with only a handlebar set and mirror updates possibly. I will clean her up, put a windshield and saddle bags like Sarah's so that this will be my wife's ride. I found that the only "tech data" I could find was a Haynes, so I delayed that and found y'all. I had to disassemble the carbs and perform a thorough cleaning, needless to say, I mixed and matched the jets the first 4 times I disassembled and assembled until I came across some of the great posts on this site. Last night I installed all the jets in their appropriate locations and man does she purr. A lot of work ahead of me, but I know it will be a great bike.

Trying to find information on replacement VIN tags. Rebirthing a 1982 XJ550. Frame is almost torn down completely so I'll need a replacement sticker soon.

Familiar story for me I suppose. I had been thinking about getting a bike for a couple years off and on. I think it was last year I actually went to the local cycle center and sat on a couple new bikes. I kind of liked the Rebel 500 but it was more than I wanted to spend and I sure as heck wasn't about to finance a toy. Finally this Spring I took the MSF class and started watching Craigslist for a bike. My criteria were that it had to be under $1500 (preferably under $1000), had to be running, have a clear title and be capable of cruising my smiling face down the highway at 75 mph. Being a total noob to riding, I didn't want some ill-handling cobbled up junk, so I didn't look at the choppers. Also since I wanted to sit more or less upright and not have to be chewing on the handlebars, I didn't bother looking at sportbikes either. And being 55 years old, I didn't feel like the ninja or whatever really fit my mental image of what my bike ought to look like. Oh, and being mechanically inclined having worked on hotrods for several years, including daily driving a '65 Galaxie for a 5 year stretch I wasn't worried about age. I wasn't expecting to just get on and ride carefree at my budget.

Queue up a Craigslist scammer or two and what appeared to be a decent deal on a bike that was a bit farther away than I had hoped to look, I end up making the trip. 1.5 hours or so drive, which might not seem all that bad, but this is all the way on the opposite side of Fort Worth from me. You'd think that I could find something in Dallas or Fort Worth, but no! Anyway, I get out to the place and they guy shows me the bike, fires it up and tells me all about it and the guys who have come to see it and made lowball offers etc. I end up getting the thing for $800, which might be a little high but probably not too terrible. I still check out bikes on Craigslist and have seen maybe one or two bikes that I would call a similarly good deal but nothing yet that really jumps out to me as being "better". As part of my shopping process I searched out whatever info I could on any bike that looked somewhat interesting, and xjbikes seemed like a great resource with plenty of long time happy owners. So you guys actually played a part in my purchase!

I have bought a bit more than expected to get the bike in line, but it's looking like I'll be into it for around $1400 or so? Still seems like a great deal considering it looks good, runs good, has new tires and brakes, new horn,
lights and electrical stuff is working properly, has new shocks on the back and by the end of next week will have the fork seals done too. Hopefully this weekend I'll be able to polish the engine side covers and clean up the wheels and do some general detailing to make it really look decent.

Here she is, in orange as purchased and now after I've painted it.

I got here with the help of Dave Fox. A friend of mine met him at a local car show, flea market this past week end. Steve got Dave's contact information , sent it to me, I called Dave , he sent me here.

I have a 1982 650 Seca, needs some love, thanks in advance for your help.

When I was buying my bike, a 1981 Yamaha Maxim xj550, I did a bunch of research on it (I was brand new to motorcycles and wanted to get a good "beginner" bike) and stumbled across this community - this was back in 2007 - and my bike has been sitting for about 5 years now (I have been living in Vietnam) and now I am BACK in the USA and trying to learn about these bikes again and trying to decide if I should sell it as is or give it the TLC I want to and get it back on the road!

Hello everyone. Found this site by typing seca 650 into the search bar (duckduckgo). Everytime I needed some info on this bike, whether it was VIN, electrics, brakes etc...this site would show up. Great site!

I recently purchased a 1982XJ650RJC (Canadian)...sure reminds me of the RD350LC. It appears to be in original condition, other than exhaust tailpipes and the seat. Still going through the systems on the bike...she needs some work.

Looking forward to be a part of this site.

    Cheers, Tom

Hi All, Molochnik here, and this is my first post.
To answer the question posed, this is the first site I came across while researching a bobber with which I've offered to mentor a youngster on reviving. It appears we have an XJ650J.

I have some experience with these engines but I'm sure I can learn a lot here too. My first professional motorcycle job was replacing a 3rd gear in a Seca, so XJs have had a special place in my heart...we'll see how that goes depending on how this bobber project shakes out.

I apologize for the Harley product in the avatar; I don't happen to have any pics of anything close to an XJ (my R1 or XS650) on this computer.

I was given a bike that a former coworker's son left in her garage and moved out of state. She wanted it gone. I had no bike experience, but liked the ascetics of a cafe racer.

Back in the early 80's, after leaving the Marine Corps, I had a Honda CB350 which developed a leak around a spark plug and holed a piston. I bought a couple of Kawasaki Mach III 500 triples and had a blast. Easy to work on and fun to ride. Son arrived and I ended up quitting riding (too risky) and skydiving and sold one of the bikes. The other sat around for around 20 yrs before I decided to sell it. A few kicks and the 20 yr old gas started it up. Fast forward to now and my son gave me this old '86 XJ700S that he bought but hadn't done any work on and didn't ride it. Since it was a very hard starter and drained the battery if it ran, I found this place while searching for info to aid in fixing it up. Glad I did.

Internet search after search lead me to this site. After much looking around out there, this site is by far the most resourceful when it comes to advice, technical expertise, and the availability of both new and used parts. While I don't contribute much at this point (full time job, raising a herd of children, house to fix up, and three Yamaha motorcycles to maintain) - I have been really impressed with this site and find myself coming back all the time. The "Church of Clean" was instrumental in my carburetor rebuild, along with Len's expertise and inventory.

Job well done to everyone who contributes to this site. Thank you for your time and resources in making it what it is today.

    Cheers!

In preparation of buying my 1983 XJ 900 31A I knew I would need a forum to answer a ton of my questions. So I simply googled "XJ 900" forum and this popped up.

Been reading here for months and months and recently joined since I felt bad about not being a member . Tons of great threads have answered lots of my question. So a big thanks to all who contributes!!!

Was looking at buying an XJ as a project. Looked at a 750, 650 and ended up getting a 700 (85). As I knew I’d be doing work to get it running I started Googling symptoms which led me here. Found a metric ton of info and tips!

do not turn a 650 seca into a project keep it original it is a 1 year bike.

if you insist in pods for your bike get it running and tuned first to see if it has any issues. this will remove any motor carb issues before you travel down the dark road to the vodoo of pods

I just had a new liner put in the tank and I put some drag style handle bars on, but that is the furthest I've gone so far. I know it runs but it definitely needs tuning. I like the look and flow of the bike so I would fine with some minor changes and riding it like that.

I found link on Vintage Yamaha on Facebook. I am restoring a XJ650J that I got from friend who's brother bought it new. Nice bike to start with but sat a long long time. Have been searching for NOS parts but wow so expensive! Painting it now then will be ready to ride for first time in 25yrs.

many parts are available from our supporting vendor. which would be new as compared to NOS . nos parts from ebay can be over priced people collect them when they are in original packaging

I just stumbled across Roy Gilby's XJ750 build at Back Street Heroes. The tank modification is pretty much identical, and it looks like the bike was modified in a similar visual style (though a very different approach to the frame).

Was looking for data on a repair and got linked directly to one of your threads. Been my first stop when I need info ever since.

I googled seca forum honestly. Just got mine running a couple days ago and having a blast on it. Cool to see there is as big of a XJ community as there is a XS lol. I fall into both.
