    Hi,

I found this site via looking for info in my bike when I bought my XJ700 Maxim X recently.

Nice feel to the forum & people seem friendly. Tech articles are useful as well.

I bookmarked the site & have been looking in for a while, but only registered & startedposting today!

Well, welcome one and all!! This place is one of the best places I've ever found on the web! Tons of great folks with lots of insightful help to be had here. If you ever need any help or parts, our resident "go to" guy is chacal. The man has all of the parts that you could ever need and, ships all over the world in record time. His prices are second to none and, what he doesn't have he'll give a hand helping you find them. You can find him & his list-O-parts at http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=2 ... t=192.html
Send him an email or PM him and you'll get a fast reply. I dealt with him for almost every part I needed to do a total re-build on my XJ700N

    Cheers all

When I bought my 2nd Maxim, an '83 750, in 1997 I joined the XJOwners club online. When I upgraded to my Victory I joined the VMC and left XJOwners. My wife recently got her motorcycle endorsement so I was in the market for a "first bike" for her. I searched craigslist for awhile until I found a nice '82 650 Maxim. So I went online looking for the XJOwner's club online but I found that it was incorporated into XJBikes. This site looks awesome...much more modern.

Googled my way to this awesome site. Was looking for some parts for the 85 Maxim-X, and ended up here. Dropped by as a guest for the first bit, then finally got around to registering. Love the feel of the site, and the amount of technical expertise is incredible (not really a strong enough word, but it's late and I'm tired). Looking forward to spending a lot of time around here....
And for those in the Vancouver area, I'll be keeping my eyes open for ya..

I was formerly the Technical Editor for Road Rider Magazine, and then later, Cycle News. I was active in the motorcycle industry from 1980 through 1986, and I very well remember the introduction of these various model bikes when they were brand new. I rode a 650 Seca (XJ650) to Alaska in June, 1982. I crashed the first Yamaha Vision that was brought into the country.

Recently, I went looking for a bike so my wife can learn to ride. I found a 1985 Yamaha FJ600, and that's what brought me to this forum. I just couldn't see spending $5,000+ for a 'beginners bike' (we paid $400 for the FJ600, and it has new tires and more). Going to take some work to get the carbs straightened out (it was last registered in '98).

Nice forum you have here. I have a long memory and fondness for these bikes (especially the 650 Seca), and will be happy to answer questions about originality of parts for these bikes. After 25+ years, a lot has happened to these machines!

    Fantastic website!

'Google is my friend' is how I found you.

The last bike I owned was in 1982, an SR500 which was sold when the kids came along.

Last week a colleague who knew about my affinity for the 'Thumper' asked if I wanted to buy a friend's SR500; went to see it and it was a part-conversion mess! So I started looking on the 'net until I found this one http://capetown.gumtree.co.za/c-Cars-Ve ... Z160437544 . Not an SR500 but I'm grown up now  In looking for details about the XJ650 I discovered your site - and very pleased I did too

Have made an offer, put down a securing deposit, a mate will be test driving it tomorrow (the bike is 1,600kms away in Cape Town - I am on the east coast of South Africa in Durban) and if it is in satisfactory condition it will have a new owner by Thursday evening!

So hold thumbs for me please.

    Post script 30 October:

Deal done! Comments by my test rider - any comments?:

    1. The battery will need replacement soon.
    2. No leaks anywhere that I could spot.
    3. She starts at the push of a button after just one or two swings of the motor. I didn't even use the choke.
    4. Idling is a bit rough when cold with a funny rattle at idle speed. This disappears when engine temperature is up
to normal. Not sure what it is, but before I could find the source of the sound, it disappeared.
    5. Gearshift and clutch action is smooth, on both the up- and the downshift.
    6. The one plastic side cover is not standard, but I'm sure one can source an original.
    7. The suspension is very hard. Also consider that I'm use to a BMW GS type setup and maybe that's just the way the
older road bike suspensions are suppose to feel.
    8. Brakes are sharp and smooth.
    9. I cruised between 100 and 120 km/h and the motor purs like a kitten - smooth and responsive.
    10. Once the engine is hot, the idle speed is very high. I'm sure one can just set the idle screw on the carb, but I didn't want
    to fiddle with it.

In summary, I couldn't believe that I was riding a 30 year old bike!!! I think if you give it a little TLC you'll have many happy miles.

When I bought my XJ900N, the seller told me about this forum. Having been associated with other forums over the years I assumed XJ Bikes would be similar: not much substance, just Buy/Sell info. How wrong was I! This is the most comprehensive site I've seen. Not only is it full of technical gold, but the passion for the XJ is evident. Makes me think I've bought something special.... :)

Yahoo search. I was looking for info about the 550 actual displacement one day because I couldn't remember where it was stamped on these motors. Ended up seeing this site in the search and had used it a lot for info. Then ust figured it would be better to oin, contribute, and be one of the elite. Haha:)

Google, searching for a Maxim forum. I'm not among the XJ owners...yet. I'm looking, and need more information about the XJ line. Like what inline fours Yamaha was making in the 80's, etc.
    Looks like a handy site!

    Hi XJbikes!

    How did I get here?

I had seen quite a few XJs for sale in my area which prompted me to do a Google search. I have been in the market for a long time for a decent used UJM, (CB/GS/KZ etc.) and this forum served as my primary research means for the XJ models.

What made my decision a lot less daunting was the wealth of information available right here. It looks like I'll be in good hands with this community. I picked up a 1982 XJ 650 Maxim over the weekend.

I will likely be lurking a bit more until the weather warms up just reading and learning.

I was actively involved in a motorcycle search on Craigslist. It seemed that all I was finding in my price range was Yamahas. I saw a Radian, several Viragos, and eventually a Maxim, for 600. I couldn't figure anything out about the bike like I could the other two, until I found that it was actually a XJ650J. Once I typed that into Google, XJBikes.com came right up. I still can't figure out where it says Maxim on the bike.

As to how I feel about the site and the Maxim. This site is the single most informative resource on a motorcycle I have seen since I started deciding on what bike to buy. It played a major role in my decision to purchase the Maxim, not just for the potential technical support but for the obvious passion that the bike brings out in the members here.

The bike was a basket case, and after only a few days, is still far from perfect. I'm a diesel mechanic in the Navy, and know enough about Otto cycle engines that this older, simple engine is cake to work on. I have a blast making it run better. When I got it, the intake boots were off, and there were straight exhaust pipes on it. The po had to run the enrichment circuit just to make it run. So I put the boots on. SERIOUS pinging in Cylinder 1. So I got some Seafoam and poured it everywhere. I mean in the crankcase, in the gas in a huge concentration (there was little gas in it), and through the spark plug holes to break up the deposits in there that are causing the detonation, and I cleaned and gapped the spark plugs. I set the idle screw a little high because it was needing throttle just to stay running. Last but not least, I set it on PRI to ensure the vacuum wasn't causing it to run out of gas in the float bowl (? hey, I know diesels, they don't have carbs, but I wanted to make sure that wasn't a problem).

Of course it wouldn't start, you kidding?

The engine was effectively flooded, so I just turned it over while occasionally ensuring that there was, in fact, a spark.

Eventually it started, without choke (it's warm here is SoCal), and idled, high, until I turned the screw down of course. It was surging B.A.D. Still don't know why. I decided to drive it to the end of the alley, where it promptly stalled (after idling for 10 min) and would not restart. Walked it back, jumped it for extra cranking juice, and tried to start it again. When it started, it had stopped surging, and the idle was a steady high rev. I needed gas, so I drove it 12 blocks to the nearest station. Lowered the idle after I got gas, and drove it around until dark.

Not bad for $600. Now to make it run better and look better.

I'm curious to everyone's thoughts. I know it doesn't run perfect, it is in serious need of a valve adjustment and I would be HIGHLY suprised if it didn't need a carb cleaning. What else is good to do on these bikes if they haven't been properly maintained?

Thanks for everyone's help. Without all the prior posts I would have had a much more difficult time at it.

1982 XJ650J Maxim, my first bike. I'm in love.

I bought my 81 Seca 750 and started doing Google searches for just that. '1981 Yamaha Seca 750' Just trying to find more information about the bike and whatnot. Came across this site and BOOM! Fell in love. :)

I am new to the "classic bike" scene, and have been compiling project bikes for a little while now. I have been looking to the "do the ton cafe" racer index (dotheton.com) for inspiration and project ideas. My first project bike is an 81 XJ 550 Maxim.
I posted some pics at the start of my build which was just last week, and I immediately started getting feedback that I should come to this sight. I was told that the guys over here really know their stuff when it comes to XJ bikes, and so..... Here I am.
I will do some lurking to learn my way around, and I plan on gaining as much advice as I can from the XJ gurus that I am told are here.
This is gonna be a fun project! :D

I found this site by yahoo search over a year ago when I was looking for front and rear axle nut torque specs. For some dumb reason I didn't join then, oh yeah now I remember my Yamaha repair manual came in shortly after.

Shame on me, though I did remedy that mistake by joining up in Feb. after a couple fellow XJ'ers got on my case. I'm glad I did great group of people!!
