The 550's have a sixth gear instead of five if that's what you mean.

I wish my 700 had a 6th gear, 5th is just too darn low

yep...we have a 6th gear. I only can use it going over 60 or so on the highway...otherwise it is just waaaay too low in the rpms and lugs the engine. But it is a nice cruising gear when I have to slab!

Does anybody know if it would it be possible to swap that 6th gear in place of my 5th on my 86? It could sure use a drop in rpms on the highway.

Curious what are your rpms at 65 mph in 6th?

If I remember correctly the rpm is about 5000 at 65mph. You can change your sprockets to achieve this too. Much easier.

doh!!! what was I thinking? right then. Well I checked on the way in this morning, at 5000rpm in 6th gear I am at 70mph or so on my gauges. 65 was about 4500rpm.

I've redlined my X a few times, which puts it around 210ish Km/hr, about 130 mph. Most memorable time was on trip with a friend who rode a VMax. We were heaing home from the coast of Maine and "making time".

We were on a long stretch of new pavement on Hwy 26 in Maine when he started to speed up. So I sped up. Then him and I followed again. I guess he decided around then that he was gonna put my little Baby Max in its place so he opened it up wide and even though he pulled away I wasn't far behind him. He was pretty surprised.

First time I'd been up to that kind of speed and it wasn't nearly as scary as coming through Dixville Notch at 30mph. That notch is crazy!! One second you're riding up a fairly long steepish hill... Next thing you know your bike levels out at the top and there's nothing in front of you but sky and treetops! Then the nose dips and you start heading down!

Not nearly as fast as on the Buell.............

Eighty-five before the headshake started. And that's plenty fast for a 30 year old bike.

I usually keep to the speed limit, but i have taken my XJ600 to 100mph just to see what it was like. IT was GREAT!!. but i know now why they dont have side panels on modern bikes. They pop off at those speeds if worn.

I took the XJ1100 to 9500 rpm in 5th gear, I'm guesing that is somewhere around 140mph, the spedo stops at 85. I know it's in the redline , but I wanted to see if it would do it. I took my XS on the same trip a few years ago and got to 9500 + rpm and the spedo read 145.
Wow that was fun and scary at the same time.

My XJ750J with 40k miles at the racetrack in brainerd, MN went 132 acording to my GPS. This was without the fairing and extra weight and the bike is compleatly stock with only new tires and high octain gas. Scared the Cr*p out of me.

Hit just over 100mph a few times. Once with a passenger. Felt solid as a rock the entire way, but that's definitely fast enough for me.

Here in the middle of SoDak the roads go on for miles dead straight. 2 days ago I gott behind a very long line of cars behind a big doudle trailer dumptruck......at 55 mph. I pulled out and just kept going with no sign of oncoming traffick I layed into it till I passed the truck. When I got to work I pulled my GPS of the bike and the top speed read 104.4 mph. I honestly didn't intend that but it was so. Heres the disturbing part. I noticed on a walk around after I got to work that the sidewall had begun to seperate was rubbing on my driveshaft.....It could have come apart. From now on I won't take those kinds of chances. My family is too precious.

I've had my 900 up to 240 on the clock.... BUT i have a 750 speedo drive on my front wheel and it is setup for a different sized rim than the 900 so reality is I was probably only doing about 200kmph

Well, knowing that 40kph = 24.9mph, a quick bit of math comes up with a shade over 130mph.

I have pegged the speedo (85) and had it pegged for maybe 45 seconds after that, pretty high up in the rpm's in fifth, I have no idea how fast I was actually going buy my guess is somewhere in between 100-110? It pulled very well up there, I was impressed. I love my lil 650.

I have no idea. The spedometer is a mess. I *think* the gearbox and cable are okay, but I think the meter itself is owned. Needle is all over the place, even around 30mph (I guess... HA!).

HOWEVER, I might be able to ask you guys and you'll know. I took the thing - without plates, insurance, or even a TITLE - to Jefferson City on US 63. Most of the way, I was in 5th gear with the tach at 6k or 7k (depending upon how straight the road was). So how fast was I going?

I know I was probably going over 80mph, since the speed limit is 70mph, no one drives that slow, and I was passing them anyway.

IRONY: I was driving to Jeff to visit the HIGHWAY PATROL! Ha! Had to get a replacement VIN plate before I could get it retitled. It was a great trip.

I think that's how I lost the right side cover, though. It was there when I left. Missing when I got back. :( That was also the trip where I figured out how to flip the tank to reserve while driving. ;)

Did I mention that for that entire trip, I had no front brakes? Used the rear brakes the whole way. I wonder if there is any material left on the shoes?

As for no front brakes, that is the majority of your stopping power.... You are officially crazy, congratulations! Dont worry, I am too, not meant as an insult. And, not sure about what bike you were driving, but my 750 is at about 80 mph at 6 grand, not sure about 7, no reason to drive that fast.

While I shoot past the traffic when congestion kicks in, I usually dont go past 80ish... I cant afford the ticket. In Ca, they penalize you for every mile an hour past the first 10 that you break... Not sure how much anymore, but no thanks...

There was that time with that pretty girl next to me that kept going faster though... Probably 90-95ish...

:) Yeah, it was probably my most... exhilerating ride on two wheels since my first one. Maybe ever. I know about the front/rear stopping ratio. Fortunately, on a weekday in the middle of the morning, US 63 is pretty clear with lots of visibility, so I basically just had to be really careful to click down a gear - or two! - and throttle down at the first sign of an obstacle.

Ha! MO is the same way about the accelerating fines. They want someone doing 10+ over, so if you throttle back a little and DON'T hit your brakes, they'll mostly leave you alone. After all, the idea is to make the road safe. If you're paying attention and not REALLY flying, you're probably not a danger to others.

Once I get the bolt situation fixed, I'll have to add a modern spedo to the parts list. I guess that the cable's rotation rate vs. the wheel's speed is standard enough that any spedo will do?

'Bout a year after I bought my '85, I gave her a good handful. It started floating pretty good and I backed off at 110. Once you've done it, there's no need to do it again. To me, the thrill is the acceleration, not the top end.

Now that it's running, I got it up to 45 mph!!!

(BTW.. that translates to warp speed in the land of no shocks, no rear brakes, a little front brake and 24 year old tires!)

    Ludacris speed! haha (Spaceballs fans??)

90ish. After about that fast I don't have a whole lot of desire to push it over a buck. Not thats its jittery, I just don't like either being pulled over, or becoming someones brand new bumper sticker.

On the 82 650 Maxim I used to have I hit 120. I was laying down on the bike and was scared s***less. I just wanted to see what it would do. The original speedo was on of those 85mph ones, but I had replaced it with a different one that read 140. At 120 I still had throttle left and decided that the prudent thing would be back it down rather than run the risk of becoming part of the roadside scenery.
I think my current 650 Seca could probably do the same thing, based on the few test runs I have had on it, but I'm not real antsy to try it again. Age seems to increase common sense somtimes.

old thread I know but I thought I'd contribute. Me and buddy with an '03 GSXR600 were fooling around and I had her to about 120 or 125ish. Not exactly sure I try not to stare at the speedo when I'm going that fast.

Of course this was done in a closed course. ;)

I bought an 81 XJ650 new in August of 1980. I rode that one like a 22 year old would and had the speedo pegged on 85 quite a few times. I have pegged the needle maybe once on my XJ650 Midnight. I'm older and want to take care of this rare bird.

Anyway, if I wanna go fast, I'll ride my VMax. I've had it to 135 (and got there quick!). But at that speed, that thing wiggles like a slinky toy! With such powerful engines, VMaxes have always had a weak frame and have never been lauded for their handling. They're just dragsters. Run 'em up in the triples quickly and then back'em back down to about 100 or get ready to be bucked off.

My Maxim likes it around 72 mph.

I've gone up to 185km/h a few times (115mph) briefly, not sure if it would go much quicker than that if I held it open for a bit.. it gets rather loud and windy at those speeds :|

my speedo only reads up to 85
the r6 running next to me read 110

    warning to all of you
110 has a bad habit of snapping the spedo cable
so if your gonna drive that fast disconect the cable first
mine is zip tied to the fork so i can just unthread it and drop it an inch or so

no i do not make it a habit of driving this fast
only when i need to catch my brother on his r6 (he loves drivin stupid fast)
