I guess I'm not going be finding out what my 550 SECA will do once I have the done. Don't plan on changing the speedo. But had my '74 Z1-900 at 130+ getting onto Alligator Alley back in the early 80's. That is, until it started to going into a death wobble. Fastest was on my FJ1200 at 150-155 mph. Not sure. Only up there for seconds at a time. Thing was rock solid. Had it up to 120 mph two up with my girlfriend at the time. She only weighed 90lbs, LOL. Only have had my current 76' KZ900 up to 95 mph or so. Don't really trust the front end on this one. I don't like to take the risks anymore given my kids are still pretty young.

    I've got an 81 xj750 seca.
With pods, fresh plugs, supertrapp 4-1. and being as areodynamic as I could, I managed to hit 200km/h
It did take a while after 180, but I had a LONG stretch of good road.

Before I took it apart my Seca 750 got it up to 130. It was down a very slight hill on the highway with a strong wind at my back. I couldnt resist the tempation and it was the only time I ever took the bike above 100. The speedometer is off of another bike(idk what) and it goes up to 160mph.
Anyways the front tire blew out the next day as I was slowing down to a traffic light. I realized that if I had a blowout at 130mph they would have to hose my remains off the highway(at 25mph it violently tankslapped).

I really like this article. Most are believable but some are off by a lot. I have seen more the 1 person saying their 550s go 135 its not possible. Fitz can back me up here. Stock gearing i believe they redline at about 110 that's roughly 2300 rpm more over 12500 rpm is a lot for any 10k bike that's a lot of time when running top speed. You can say someone changed the gearing but it would be turning about 3k at 60 that would kill acceleration on a hi rpm motor and there is no way it would pull it. I am not putting anyone down. Speedo errors on motorcycles are bad can be 15 or 20 mph at 120mph. 135mph is faster then most 750s before mid 90s when they really bumped the power on them.

The 04' Daytona I had was stupid fast. 115HP on a 440lb machine. Never got that one past 120MPH though it tops out at around 145MPH. There is a long strech of usually unadulterated highway heading back into town where I've had the SECA900 (once) at 140+MPH screaming at about 7-8K RMP in 5th before I decided I can't think that fast. Never done it since... Don't think I'm too interested in trying anymore. I give ranges because when I'm going that fast, I don't tend to look at the gauges too much.

Dont some of the gearboxes have different gearing?
And dont some of the bikes have 18" wheels versus 16" wheels?

    That's what you think!

It's easy to creep up to the ton/ton-ten mark once you get used to riding more, just needs care not to do it too often & get caught out by law or luck, as someone once told me "never ride faster than your angel can fly"

Both of my 550s and my Norton also have their original paint and graphics. Only one of my 550s has its original speedo. I need to know how fast I'm going. And I'm not alone.

KAZMAN! That's what I'm talkin' 'bout!

I did some research, and we can't blame Reagan, it only happened on his watch. The whole 85mph speedo silliness was initiated in the Nixon years through Carter, and Reagan only inherited it. Due to the inherent slowness of the Federal dinosaur, by the time it got enacted, the crisis was over and it was a bad idea to begin with.

We ALL own "over the ton" bikes, regardless of displacement. We're GONNA go more than 85mph, truth be told.

Exorcise the madness, my XJ brethren! Join the crusade! This 85mph silliness must go!

    ('Tain't hard.)

Don't know how fast I was going since the needle stopped moving past 85 but there was a lot more acceleration after that point. So who knows? Plenty fast for that bike. And yes, new tires and new brakes all around.

When I had the '88 CBR1000, I know I topped 150. That was one of the scariest blasts I've ever done. Full tuck, chin on the tank, feet on the back pegs, elbows pulled in. When all you hear is the wind and not the engine, that's fast.

One thing I've always done with bikes that come into my possession is a radar gun test with a local law enforcement friend. I pass him at a certain speed on my speedometer and then he tells me the actual speed. This way I don't get tagged for doing 40 in a 35. My current XJ is very accurate all the way up to 60mph (within 1mph).

Had my wifes XJ1100 hitting 132 mph just after we got it. It had a Shoei faring and modified handle bars. I was running uphill on a 3 to 4 % grade with sweeping turns. The bike handled the sweeping turns great I had to keep my head below the wind shield or it felt like my head was going to get ripped off. The PO clamed to hit 148... pulled over by the police and bike impounded. 8o I don't believe that (the 148mph), but the bike is fast!

On the 750 with the 18 inch wheel turns 4500 at 60 maxims turn a little less then 5k 9k at 120 and 10k for the maxim. 550-650 turn more rpm then that. 15mph per 1k on the seca 750 thats 10000 rpm at 135. Maxim 750 would be 11200 at 132. The 900s and 1100s turn less rpm with more power so higher top speed is attainable The 550 is the only bike you can change gearing on stock gearing 12000 rpm at 132. No manner what your gearing is a bike with about 60 hp gonna be really hard to pull that kind of mph. They are all great bikes but in the early 80s superbikes were topping out at 140 or so.

Buried at 85 mph and didn't want to go much faster than that. My 81 XJ750RH started shaking once I hit about 80 and got progressively worse.

I got her "Flat-out" flying down the White Mountain foothills.

The Speedo was pinned at 85.

    I'm sure I was doing 3-figures, though.

EHS!! Did they rough you up, steal your money, and put you in stocks for the whole community to see?

Took the 550 to Hallett Raceway near where I live and coming down the 4% grade of the long straightaway went 117mph!! Verified using GPS. Of course I finally had it in fine tune, had the best fuel in, proper air in tires (which were rated for that speed), was wearing ATG, waxed everything including my helmet, and was tucked inside my 1/4 fairing. Overall very pleased with my 32 year old Yamaha. Factory top end: 113mph. hmm....E3's, downhill, tailwind?? I don't know. BUT FUN!

This was back in about 1982 when i did this . bike was very hopped up and low miles in a down hill 4 lane road in the middle of the night . . it was a 750 as well which has a little more top end than the 550 but anything over 100 is a rush . Now days the old seca likes the speed limit and 4000 rpm's or less . Oh to be young again .....lol . No they gave me a ticket and let me go that night . things were better back then !!

The kerker header is a double edge'd sword . It really added power to the bike with a rejet but at the same time running hard in the middle of the night the cops could hear me coming and be waiting for me . I must be getting old , as i enjoy just rolling on throttle through the windy turns here on the country back roads now, and have just as much fun . . I seldom get over about 5000 rpm's anymore

    You got my vote!

I never go faster than 95 in a 65 when there is a ticket threat.
One Summer, I taped a Radar Detector to my helmet and ran an earplug, see if I could break the record from my house to my sisters, over in Saratoga Springs, NY.

The Mass Pike two-laner, from Sturgbridge to Lee is a wide-open-throttle time trial.
Sleek performance coupes and sedans are left-laneing to Albany; looks like they are actually drafting as they go by.
When they do, I show the Max the whip and attempt to join the fun; staying-back enough so if I see Break Lights, I can go from all-ahead flank to Ahead-standard guickly.

Sooner of later your "In the beam."
I was on a stretch of the Pike that's not too far from the New York Thruway toll.
    Alone. Right lane. All mine.
    A Lincoln Mk-5 passes me. He's gone.
My Radar Detector sounds a short "BRAAP"!!!
Only that Lincoln up-ahead; so I'll close the distance watching his tail lights.
Another single "BRAAP". Check my 6 for a trailer. Clear.

    Last exit before Toll.
Lincoln signals for the upcoming off-ramp.
Move-out to pass the Mk-5 and wave good-bye.
    "BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP"
I saw the Transmitter in the rear window and a Trooper styling behind the wheel of that Hot Rod Lincoln.
Hidden lights started strobing. He tapped the siren and it sounded like the basketball game final horn.

    He wrote on the ticket.
    Clocked 95/ Hawk Instant-on.

I went up to about 160km/h on my Maxim and by that point I thought the wind was going to just blow me off the bike... The perfect bike to follow the speed limit XD

Since I'm an old-timer and don't like the thoughts of higher insurance for speeding, I've only had my air head up to about 85. But what a rush to see how quick you can get there. I love doing 9 grand shifts through 1st and 2nd. I can only imagine what it's like to hit 5th at 9000.

I have an 86 XJ700 X. I have had mine up to 126 mph and still pulling. Foolish yes I don't do that often.
However I do like to get on the freeway rather quickly 3rd to 4th work out great for overtaking other vehicles.
What I don't like is that at about 110 mph the front end gets light and a little wiggly. I usually kept it around the mid 70's and it purrs. :)
After reading the specs of the bike and realizing that the US model was basically a F*** You to Harley for the embargo 1986 &1987. This is my own opinion o_O
I realized that Yamaha had just de-tuned their race motor and stuck it in a street bike, hence the aggravation of adjusting the valves. Less moving parts the easier to reach the 10,ooo RPM red-line
If you haven't done the valve adjustment on your XJ700 X you just don't understand.;)
I am not recommending breaking the speed limit either as this usually doesn't turn out well for the rider.

Transistor controlled ignition. My 82 650 walked away from my buddies 1500 kawi he is so proud of from 60mph up until he chickened out and let off. Somewhere north of 120mph. I only ever saw him in my mirror...

The upside of the shim-under-bucket arrangement is that once broken-in the valve adjustment periods generally increase greatly. 56k miles between adjustments is not unheard of.

That's great news cause I was sitting around 50,000 when I did the valve adjustment for the first time. I ended up changing 18 of the 20 shims. pricey I do have to say at near 20 bucks a shim.

All I know is what I have learned from others. Since that was the first adjustment ever for the bike, you might need to change a few again at the next 26k check.
